Although the ideas about environmentalism and uplifted species are powerful and the universe that Brin creates is interesting, this book, like the previous two in the series, fails to deliver on its promise. Brin repeatedly raises huge questions about the universe, evolution, sentience, and ethics, and he repeatedly defers them in favor of a more limited plot structure (in the first book, he tells a mystery story; in the second book, he tells an adventure story; and in this book, he tells a story of war and political intrigue). After the more than 600 pages of this book, I still have no more answers about the big questions that were raised in the previous two books. This is very frustrating. I would give the book a lower rating, but there are passages that are exciting or compelling in one way or another and there are characters and species types who are interesting. In short, this book (and series) is disappointing and frustrating in light of the larger issues Brin raises, but, from a more limited perspective, it is at least generally entertaining.

Eat, Pray, Love Started listening to the audio version of this autobiographic exploration of self and the world (including at least 2 places I'd love to immerse myself in, probably all three) but ran out of time. Will definitely sign it out again. Love the concept and author's style.

Die Welt ist dumm, gemein und schlecht, Und geht Gewalt allzeit vor Recht, Ist einer redlich treu und klug, Ihn meistern Arglist und Betrug.
Thanks to my masters thesis, I read this book for information and contacts, but I realized it was more than just a research tool for me. It shed light on the glass ceiling everpresent for women and the roles we are subjected to in the eyes of society.

Loves it!! A short story about fitting in. A unique imaginative short story about ponies, cliques, and spilling cotton candy blood. Loves it!!

This is a highly enjoyable book! Not macabre, not morbid at all, and filled with a fascinating look at an essential part of human society that most of us never really think about. At the very least, I'm going to go back and take another look at my living will and last wishes. My one quibble would be the level of editorializing from the author at some points. I respect that journalists have an obligation to let the reader know their own feelings about the subject at hand, so we'll recognize any bias it might create in their account; I admire her ability to find humor in various scenarios without ever becoming disrespectful of the fact that she is, indeed, writing about what used to be people - loved and cared for; and I understand that this is a popular science book and, as such, the narrator needs to maintain a human and relatable voice for the intended reader. But there were several times where I wish she'd simply given me the facts, told me what she'd learned about the motives and perspectives of the people she profiles, and kept her personal commentary to herself. I know this isn't a hard science text but I was hoping it would be more of an academic science and history than it was. I think I'm too much of a scientist at heart to be her intended audience.

a compelling read for anyone wanting to learn more about the Holocaust from the perspective of someone who lived through it (though I suppose he did kill himself thereafter)

It's a bad habit, but I keeping acquiring more books even though I have given myself a fairly specific goal for 2011 Reading. Several months ago, I picked up Field of Blood by Denise Mina at Schuler's Bookstore in Lansing in the used book section. Partly I was surprised by the large used section, which had some tempting titles. It took great fortitude to limit myself to one book. I discovered Denise Mina early and read her Garnethill Trilogy. When I started Field of Blood, I was concerned that I wouldn't like it but Paddy (and the author) totally won me over. Be careful though. You may stay up past your bedtime to find out how things are going to be resolved. The next book is The Dead Hour. Guess I have to add that to my list!

Insightful. That is the best word to describe it. I like the "how we change, and not the scenery" stuff.
