Recommended to me by the director of our west coast office, I have to say, I might avoid any more of her recommendations. I got through it in about 24 hours and got pretty bored by that evil vine. Gory, a quick and easy read and really not worth the hype it received.

Awesome Paranormal story! I loved Gwen. She felt real and her decisions felt real. It took me a chapter or so to really dig into the book, but it sure does pick up after that! The different types of paranormal beings were well thought out, their powers made sense, and their interactions weren't the stereotypical aspects we've come to expect in paranormal books. Ms. Nelson has a talent for developing characters that will keep you coming back for more. Craved is a definite must-read. I'm really looking forward to the next Gwen Sparks novel. (And looking forward to more Aiden. Yum!)

The book starts off interestingly with a discussion of how the universe appears to be "fine-tuned" for the development and existence of life as we on Earth know it. This concept is often labelled the Anthropic Principle, and the fine-tuning actually does exist. Ross uses this fine-tuning to make a case for a creator God, and that is certainly a possibility. However, Ross far overstates the case for fine tuning and then begins to insist that all of modern physics is represented specificaly in passages in the Bible. In some cases, his attempts to shoehorn the laws of physics into biblical passages are just simply ludicrous when you read the actual passages. Ross then goes on to throw out the standard lie about evolution being "undirected," although he at least has the sense to avoid calling it random as so many creationists do. He also engages in the usual misleading langauge, as when he suggests that the Cambrian explosion of lifeforms occurred in a "geological instant," when that "instant" is known to be millions of years. Up until that point I was giving him credit for being relatively balanced in his presentation. After that the balance was gone, and he ends the book in full evangelical mode.

Oh Dear! I really wanted to like this book and if I had read it when I was 17 I know I would have loved it. For me it was just too predictable and almost a copy of Erich Segal's Love Story set in a different location - even the leukaemia was the same. It just made me want to read a good murder!

I don't think I am going to finish this one soon. I sometimes feel that Bataille's assessments are inaccurate and vague but this may just be my own unfamiliarity with the extent of his brainpower.

Madeline is one of those books that has been in print for so long that everyone seems to know the story even without necessarily having read it. When I was pregnant with Sean, Ian and I saw the 1998 film version of Madeline. While watching (and enjoying) the film we realized that we couldn't remember the story. Ian went out and bought a copy for Sean. The story is told through a simple rhyme taken a few words at a time across pages. The bulk of the tale though is in the illustrations as Madeline and her classmates walk in their "two straight lines" before many famous Parisian sites. Each page seems too simple but there is no line nor color nor word wasted. Some pages are drawn in black and white lines on a bright yellow background. Other times the drawings border on Impressionism and take a full pallet. So if you read the book, read it once at normal speed to enjoy the words. Then read it again at a slower pace to enjoy the artwork.

I enjoyed this book because it provides a rather comprehensive description of what life is like in the circus, including pictures at the start of some of the chapters. I enjoyed the way Gruen alternates between Jacob's life in a quiet, white walled nursing home with the reminiscences of the cacophony of circus animals, circus directors, performers, and more. And in between all that, is a story about love.
