Per request I suppose I should write a review of this book. This was quite an excellent book in my opinion. It's one that Mormons and non-Mormons alike should read because it will probably confuse, upset, and inspire both sets of people. Elna Baker is very open in her discussion of how difficult it can be to be a single, LDS woman, struggling to be an artist in New York City. The book focuses around her struggle to find herself while dealing with weight problems, self-esteem, but mostly with finding love. She is torn between two worlds: the world of her religion, where she has a strong belief in God, but doesn't fit into the culture; and the world in general, where she enjoys closer friends, artistic and social fulfillment, and feels like she fits in, but always feels a deep, soulful nagging that maybe she is losing herself. Another aspect I really enjoyed is her exploration of her life. She jumps around in time from her childhood to her contemporary life and everywhere in between. She shows you how she got to where she is, and leaves you wondering where she will go next. This book raises a lot of questions and doesn't offer many answers. I found myself deeply invested in her struggle. There were times I was so concerned over the outcome of her situations that I was glued to the book and shivering with anxiety. It makes you think. What does it mean to be Mormon? What does it mean to love? How do we find who we really are in this crazy, crazy world? Disclaimer for LDS folk: there is some language that you might find offensive, and she gets quite honest talking about her romantic encounters and discusses some things that you might feel are best left to the Bishop's office; however she does all of this in a very tasteful and honest way, and in no way exploits or sensationalizes it.

It was a little slow going at the start, but man did things change fast. What starts as a sweet book about a storybook southern childhood, suddenly and unexpectedly changes when a sinister new character is introduced and starts to reek havoc on the lives of every character you'd grown to love. Ras is the most believable villain I've encountered in a book in a long time--he's dark, evil, and just when you think he couldn't get much worse, he does. The Lake/Moses family is lovable and warm, and you'll find yourself wanting nothing more than to be invited to dinner at their house. I was drawn to and repelled by the light and dark sides of this story, but the duality of good and bad was maintained without becoming mundane. Ultimately the book was heartbreaking, uplifting, and beautifully written, and it made me remember the magic of childhood, and how quickly things can change.

lovins does a disservice to the environmental movement once again, this time in a pentagon-funded book trying to sell the idea of energy efficiency to large corporations from the energy and car industries. utterly ignores the scarcity of oil and energy, by the way, don't be fooled by the title.
Interest read and recommended for high school for sure!
The Castro revolution from the inside. Turns out that revolution is just another of the many passions that fade with youth.
Studied this book at school for GCSE and it had a great impact then. Having not remembered the end, it was still as chilling this time around. Sad thing is, this happens in real life. A sad story, but a great one. Susan Hill has a simple, but beautiful style of writing.
Another Jen Lancaster book that makes me laugh out loud. Could be the topics or if could be I have a similiar funny bone.
