More about life during WWII and how Rose was treated as an Austrian in England. True story and very interesting.
** spoiler alert ** I'll admit I wasn't a huge fan of the "Twilight" series. Meyer's seems to continue her obsession with sappy dialog and unrequited love affairs. Meyer's writing is in need of some better ideas than teen girls falling for much older men. Although "The Host" concept and story idea was very original. It was new, however still very similar to "Twilight" in the sense that in the end she really didn't follow through with a more plausible ending to the story; happy ever after and Oh wait you're not alone in having an alien friend... So while it was an interesting read, the writing still needs some freshening up.

Dystopian novels are becoming more and more popular in teen and children’s fiction–so now it’s time to get picky. I haven’t read a lot books from the genre (yet) but I already can say The Water Wars is a good dystopian novel to start with. Fast-paced, suspenseful and nicely developed, The Water Wars is the tale of a group of teens who are at odds with a waterless world and a controlling monopoly who possess a carefully guarded secret...and a terrifying plan. Though the idea of a drought-ridden planet is not entirely “new”, I felt as if Stracher composed it as a fresh idea by slowly introducing the environment, characters and their way of life. I also liked how he introduced our main character’s voice, which reminded me a lot of Guy Montag in Fahrenheit 451; Vera constantly struggled (and often denied) the fact that perhaps the powerful authorities who promised to keep the people of the broken up territories safe, had entirely different agenda. Throughout the book there is a very strong sense of political views (much like Fahrenheit 451 or 1985, etc.) which plays a major role in the entire plot. I can see how some readers will be in a sense “turned-off” by this or will enjoy it all the better–as for myself, I think it made the book all the more worthwhile. What good is a dystopian novel if there’s isn’t some kind of friction with naturalistic changes and/or humanity? The semi-objective first person narrative made the story even more intriguing–the details were epic, Vera’s world made me thirstier with every page. Stracher managed to keep me guessing through most the book and kept the turn of events rolling quite nicely. Towards the end it got a little predictable but it was a great finish. I would definitely read more by Stracher and perhaps more books from the dystopian genre too. Recommendation: Teens and tweens who enjoy dystopian or who want to try something new–ages 12+ Content: Some sensuality (PG) Full review at booksandliteratureforteens.blogspot.com

This is a really good book, no doubt. Jessica Darling is an authentic character, which I can tell because sometimes the things she says make me cringe. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

I thoroughly enjoy this series from Kathleen George. She's from Pittsburgh and it's where her stories take place. It really makes you feel like you're right along for the ride or in the action because you know exactly where she's talking about. Oddly enough, I'd never heard of Sugar Lake and I am pretty well-traveled around Pittsburgh. I knew the other places though and pictured the "cottages" in my head based on other places I know like that. In addition, I used to know a lot of Pittsburgh police and have kind of given my own faces to the characters in this series. All of her stories are very true to life and so it's refreshing that she's not writing about something that is really a stretch to buy into. Her characters are strong when they need to be and vulnerable when called for as well. Oftentimes, you end up feeling sorry for one of the "criminals" (for lack of a better word) because she makes you very sympathetic to their plight. It only takes me a few hours to read these because they are definite page turners. I always try to support the local writers and this one gets a two-thumbs up!

I've gotta re-read the trilogy before I can read this book. Too bad it wasn't published when I finished the trilogy.
Incredibly well-written, but somehow short of "great"

The story takes place in a future time after some kind of nuclear event where civilization as we know it no longer exists. I first read this as a teenager and really enjoyed it. I wanted to read it again to see if it was appropriate for my 10 year old. I was expecting it to be very outdated because technology has changed so much since then, but I was surprised. Besides the fact that VHS tape was the most advanced video technology that existed at the time... and for the characters in the story.... the rest really isn't dated. Gerald Lund's writing has some annoying qualities that didn't bother me as a teenager, but he has a great imagine and is an excellent storyteller.
