Interesting speculation on history. Strong characters.

The author tells the story of his father's life in Viet Nam from the early 1940s to 1976 when Saigon fell to the Viet Cong. We learn about the French occupation, the invasion by Japan in WW II (and the subsequent terrible famine)and the Viet Nam war with the Americans. No dry history book, the stories are very personal with details of every day life in the countryside as well as the life-changing effects of 3 wars.

I really cannot decide if I loved or hated this book. A bit too much politics for my taste, I don't mind some, but.... But, a very sad sad book!!!!!!!!!!!! I really don't think I could bear to read it again, but I'm glad I read it.
I was thoroughly disappointed. Glad that I read her second book, "Gone to The Dogs" first. Felt the author jumped around from past to present, etc which was a little hard to follow at times. Felt this was more of a short story that you might read in a magazine. Also, I found it depressing, and unrealistic. Couldn't believe that a mother would condone and take it so lightly if her 15 year old son was getting high and having sex. Maybe I just didn't agree with the morals/values that the main character had. Did not enjoy this book at all - the most positive thing that I can say was that at least it was short and a fast read.

The rule among the human race—a rule that naturally admits of exceptions—is that the reputedly hard are the weak whom nobody wanted, and that the strong, caring little whether they are wanted or not, have alone the gentleness which the vulgar herd mistakes for weakness.” 1080

I've long wanted to read "The Wind in the Willows," especially as Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was one of my favorite rides at Disney World as a kid. (Alas, that ride is no more, as I was shocked to discover last summer.) The story is an enchanting tale of silvan idyll and great friendship, mixed with the uproarious exploits of Mr. Toad. Wonderful book.

I have been on Chesil Beach. It is nicer than the book. Didn't live up to the hype.

A novel that does a good job of interrogating the subject of being an immigrant in an over-the-top, slapstick, thoughtful and thought-provoking way. Very interesting read. Definitely made me uncomfortable at points.
