I must say, having read Gryphon's Eyrie first, I went into this book with a knowledge of one who has read a series and now has the prequel. Though, as one of the main characters, Kerovan's manner is stiff and rather formal. When one places it against the foil of his upbringing - the emotional abandonment of his father; the hatred from his mother; and the eventual loss of those he'd come to know as friends - such detachment is rather human. This inner turmoil is constant in all of narrative, yet it does not overwhelm the reader in a 'poor me' attitude, instead it has an atmosphere of acceptance. On the other side of the coin, Joisan, who we are told from the get-go is to become his wife (and shares the chapter-switch with Kerovan) is confident in herself and, though not sure of her abilities, has a wide streak of determination that goes far to make her a good and strong character. Though set against the back-drop of an invasion (one whose origins are clearer if read in sequence with the other witch world novels), there is little in the way of political or military talk, but it's pretty clear early on that this is more about the characters inner struggle than the physical battles happening around them, yet both play an important part to make this story a fantastic read.

Hmmmm...a hard book to rate. I didn't give this two stars because I DISLIKED it, but I certainly didn't love it. It was a bit of a chore. But I can also tell this is a very skilled writer. Some of the things in the book were just downright confusing. At some points I didn't even know if the author knew what he was talking about, but it was good. It entertained and eased your head up into dreamy clouds. More like a bedtime story. :) I don't think I'll read it again though. It was a once time thing I think. It might come up in another 20 years or so. It seemed pretty long though for a bedtime story. It had 12 short stories telling how (as the author decided) earth was created. They were fables. It was like being lazy-- and that's how the camel got his ugly hump, stuff like that. Pretty intresting. :)
I have to admit, I was a little disappointed in this one. I need to rent the movie.

My most favorite poet ever. This book is a treasure! Favorite poem: I am not yours.
A horror story, supposedly. I'd heard the Broadway songs. I think I even watched a (very boring) movie version, but I'd never read the original story. I still haven't, since my French is not that good, but I figure I've gotten the most of it. I probably wouldn't have bothered, if I hadn't read Charlotte Vale Allen's Night Magic, which uses Leroux's story as it's inspiration. The Classics edition begins with some information on Leroux. The book certainly reflects his journalistic background. And, as with today's urban legends, the author tries to establish the veracity of the story by couching the tale as a report based on letters, memoirs, and personal interviews. As with our own scary stories, it's the possibility of truth that magnifies the intensity of the fright. Of course, being the jaded people we are today, the book isn't really all that scary. For me, the distance of the tale kept me from being caught up in the telling. In most cases, the major motion is told through another person after the fact, either Christine telling Raoul what happened to her or the Persian's tale (which I found the most compelling portion of the story). The lack of Erik's perspective throughout was disappointing. Maybe it's my own morbid curiousity, but I wanted to "see" more of him. I want to try to understand him. Perhaps, I wanted to be able to pity him. This is probably why I liked the Persian's tale, since it did reveal Erik's story, though I still had questions. Erik strikes me as quite truly mad. A genius, able to function in the world he's taken over as his own, but insane. Pitiable, perhaps, in that he is finally willing to give up Christine. In so doing, he overcomes his "monster" self. In the end, all he wanted was someone to love him. That he doesn't find that makes the story sad, not scary.

I can't say anything about the plot...it's too well crafted for me to give it all away in my poorly written review. But what I can say is that Goolrick is a genius and that this book enraptured me from the moment I began and even after I finished it. The words are haunting, the actions are haunting, and the novel is haunting. I hope that he writes again, although with this masterpiece being his debut, I doubt very seriously he could achieve the same feelings...
My Thoughts: The novel wasn't perfect but I loved it nonetheless. By the second chapter I was missing Ethan dearly. He leaves a visible gap and I found Drink Deep to not be as funny as the others without the playful banter and generally upbeat mood. But Merit is the reason I keep coming back and it's great to see her as her own person again. She's going through so much emotional turmoil that you could only wish to someday be as strong as she is. Jonah has grown on me a little more now and I didn't realise how much I missed Morgan till he popped in for a visit. As for the main plot line, it was a little too obvious for my liking who the culprit was but the surprise outcome of it made up for that. If you're scared of reading this because of the ending of Hard Bitten, suck it up and you will not be disappointed. Chloe has always had a plan up her sleeve and you need to read this to find out what it is. Final Opinion: While not the best of the series, it kept me engrossed and totally happy by the end of it. This is one of those necessary novels that start the ball rolling in the lead up to the climax. The next novel looks to be a very thrilling adventure that I can't have soon enough. Rating: ★★★★★ It was awesome! First Lines: The wind was cool, the fall night crisp. A waxing moon hung lazily in the sky, so low it seemed close enough to touch. Or maybe it just seemed that way because I was perched nine stories in the air, atop a narrow metal grate that crowned Chicago’s Harold Washington Library. Favourite Quote: "How could it not have something to do with you? What else could be responsible for this?" "Global warming?" I suggested. "Have you recycled today?" A straightforward, even earnestly written science fiction book, with the novel twist of looking into the past instead of the future.
Am I the only one who found the ending so abrupt?

This is one of my favorite books. It is the reason I enjoy the genre to this day. I remember picking it out in 4th grade because it looked like a challenge and an interesting story. I've since re-read it one numerous occasions, and still love the story every time. I would highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys a great fantasy story. If you're truly looking for an experience, do yourself a favor and read the following edition: ISBN-13: 9780395362907.
