I love Tupac. 1996 was a sad year for me. 13 years old in a shitty-ass middle school in Portland, Oregon crying over the death of the charismatic and talented Tupac Shakur. I recently rediscovered his music (waves of nostalgia passed over me). Then I found this book of poetry he wrote in high school. I analysed the poems with my class of 9th graders in Oakland, and fell in love with Tupac even more. Sure, some of the poems are trite. But coming from Tupac, these imitations of Frost and other formal poets are funny and a bit touching. He shows his strength as a lyricist with his more autobiographical poems, like the title poem, "The Rose that Grew in Concrete." Read his poems, listen to his music, marvel at the fact that he did all of this before the age of 25. Tear.

This is the first book in my much-loved "Vampire Smut" series. In a world where the monsters walk amoung regular people, vampire hunter Anita Blake is the badass who keeps them in check. I personally have never enjoyed this type of book (vampires = scary), but once I read the first one, I was totally hooked. I've read the whole series (had to, because the actual smut doesn't start until about the 6th book) and recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, quick, entertaining read.

A little uneven, but interesting. Some sections are more intruging than others, and he only really hits his stride (where you get the best sense of what he's actually trying to accomplish) in the conclusion. Still, a quick and interesting read, with a minimal amount of scienc-y lingo.

Again, another introspective book from Fulghum. He certainly has a unique world view of life and dealing with small annoyances. I especailly enjoyed his story of the best cigar he ever smoked.
