I chose This Is Not Chick Lit for book club because we don't usually pick anthologies, and I wanted us to read some contemporary women authors. I was also curious to see if the whole "chick lit" thing would provoke discussion. Indeed, a lively discussion was had. Most of us felt that although chick lit may not be high literature, it has its place and shouldn't be relegated to the Harlequin romance section, and that chick lit, as a genre, offers more than its stereotype. We also discussed the anti-chick-lit chick-lit cover. High points in the anthology: "Volunteers are Shining Stars," Curtis Sittenfeld's exploration of the fine line between crazy and not crazy; Jennifer Egan's "Selling the General," in which a Central American dictator gets a PR makeover; Judy Budnitz's "Jean, Jeanne, La Pucelle, Maid of Orleans," wherein Joan of Arc's crusade is captured by a reality television crew; and Roxana Robinson's "Embrace," the tale of an evolving marriage forced to endure tragedy. Overall, I give high marks to This Is Not Chick Lit. As with any anthology it contains some stinkers, but there are also some thought-provoking stories.

Still with an uncanny ability to put you inside his characters, I enjoyed this possibly more than ATPH for the three movements and the wonderful coming of age of the main character. Coming of age books can be so trite, but this has a knowing and wonderful freedom to it. His journey with an injured wolf is epic and McCarthy gives such a grandeur to the wolf. Her kind, and relationship to the dark elements of the world in the book are so wonderful. He must be a proponent of the Gaia worldview I think, and comparisons with Call of the Wild are apt. more coming

Always fun to delve into Abbey's world of eco-terrorism...
I was impressed with how Walls could created her grandmother's voice. Great book. I liked Glass Castle better, but I was not disappointed at all.

Excellent book!
A lovely non-fiction work centered on the idea that in order to find yourself, you first must lose youself. Rebecca Solit writes cleanly and elgantly, and always returns to her central theme. It was, however, unclear whether this book was to be taken as one piece or as a collection of essays. I think the author was striving for the former, but aside from the thematic consistancy there isn't a strong through-line in the book as a whole after the first three chapters/sections.

on page 3 of Stormy, Misty's Foal. So far it is just describing the setting of the story, and what the room of the barn looks like where the horses are kept. There’s a lot of hay, animal droppings, and animals everywhere. It’s hot, smelly, and noisy in there. So far the book is pretty boring, and the topic of it is just not my cup of tea, so I think I’m going to get a different book to read.
