Simply amazing. If everyone thought along Sagan's guidelines, I cannot see how each individual's quality of living wouldn't improve dramatically. Seriously, the word need be spread.

I thought it was one of the most amazing books I have ever read!. The author's imagination is wonderful and I'm watching the movie tonight.

I love to read historial fiction, but probably wouldn't have picked out this one on my own. (Read it for a book club.) I have never really given nuns and convents too much thought, but really enjoyed this book. The characters are very interesting, and the ending kept me guessing. The book is set in the 1500's in Italy, a young noble girl is placed in a convent against her will. Come to find out that this was a common practice because of high dowry prices.
As these essays were written during WW2, many have lost their relevance today and are merely historically interesting, or interesting for readers who just happen to like Koestler's writing style (incredibly sophisticated considering he'd just started writing in English a few years before, his previous books having been written in German and French!) and in depth analyses of the world's great social, political and economic issues. In my opinion, though, much of this book is still worth reading for the perennial insights he has to offer on the development of political systems, as well as the human split between emotion and reason, a theme which he followed up in greater detail in the Ghost in the Machine and other works. In short, the Yogi is the symbol chosen by him for social systems that attempt to change mankind from within (e.g., the enforced 'spirituality' of the Inquisition), while the Commissar represents those that attempt the same from the outside (e.g. Fascism and Communism).

I wish that I'd read the other reviews on this site before I bought this book. Lesson learned. :) I'm not sure about this book. Haven't we seen the waifish, beautiful but not to herself, hiding her light under a bushel heroine before? And the somewhat dorky, not in-crowd, but with secrete powers/abilities male best friend? I didn't find anything in this book shocking, though I know I was supposed to. It just felt rehashed. Maybe I've been reading too many YA fantasies. I will read the other books in the series only if they're available at the library. Not going to spend any more money on them.

Another favorite of Jack's. We've decided that Mrs. Goodkind needs a South American accent. Jack calls the book, "Peeeekles the Fire Cat."

I return to the Motel Chronicles from time to time for it's spare sad prose. It's not for everyone. The easy way to describe this slim book to people is: If you enjoyed the movie, Paris, Texas, you'll love the Motel Chronicles.

Great for the mentorless... Although "it was amazing" seems a strange way to rate it, I do highly recommend it for anyone contemplating a PhD in clinical psych.

The ending was a little lame but still it was a good read.

Everything I learned about Judaism and bullying happened here. I love this book. Love it, love it. love it.
