Holy Smokes, 4.5. It took me a little bit to get into the groove of this book, but once I did I could't get enough. Perkins really knows how to write a great leading man. I loved Etienne in Anna and I loved Cricket in Lola. This book is one I wish I had when I was a teenager but glad I have it now. She writes realistic romance that aren't too sappy or dirty. It just feels like real life, a life that you wish you had led. I am a huge fan of Perkins and can't wait to read everything she releases.

Grounded after a mysterious accident, and forbidden to have any contact with his headstrong, curious best friend Sarah, Ryan begins a new secret journal to record his memories of the night when he broke his leg. He and Sarah secretly communicate through email and videos she posts online, which the reader is asked to watch at certain points in the diary. Discoveries, and more mysteries, unfold as this curious ghost story moves quickly forward through the days following Ryan's release from the hospital. Their hometown, Skeleton Creek, is home to some strange legends and history, and even stranger characters: the gun-toting librarian, the new Ranger who seems scared of what the kids might find, and parents who don't seem to be telling the whole truth about their motives. All of these curiosities center around a dilapidated old building called "the Dredge", used long ago to mine the land for gold, and the site of at least one "accidental" death. The videos are a gimmick that works, with just enough starts and thrills to keep the reader/viewer on the edge of her seat when accessing Sarah's missives. Though the acting is corny, each segment moves the story forward, incorporating Sarah's thoughts into what would otherwise be a very one-sided (and uneventful, since Ryan is housebound) exploration of the aftereffects of that spooky night. Cliffhanger ending.

I laughed alot at this book. Not quite as good as the first, but still a fun read. My son loves this series.

such a wonderful trilogy, i flew through it! it helps that it's young adult.. although most incredible sci-fi/fantasy books seem to start out as young adult and then regular adults get into it, haha :) i can't wait to read more from this author!

I just picked this up this morning to start reading for book club. I've only read one chapter so far and am struggling to get into this book. I even found myself skimming the pages at times since it just wasn't grabbing my attention. I'm just not a fan of historical/biblical fiction. This might be a struggle to finish. And now after reading some reviews about this book, it sounds like it's rather sexually graphic and "dirty" as one woman wrote. After reading about certain scenes from others' reviews, and considering how much I struggled with just the first chapter, I think I'm going to call it quits. There's too many other books I'm dying to read to make it worth my time reading a book I'm not enjoying. I'm just not sure why so many people gave this book 5 stars.
