Okay, this is supposed to be a post-apocalyptic struggle for survival of the human race, but Philipson has taken what could have been an X-rated sex romp and turned it into not only a good science fiction saga, but an R-rated romance as well. And the bad guys (aliens) aren't all that stereotypical either. Like any intelligent race, they have their problems and good points, but they do have a basic trait that makes them something to be avoided unless you're a lot tougher then they are. Their early story is told through the eyes of a bureaucrat with a boss from hell and a shrew for a wife. The story has two segments: one in the "near future" and the second 200 years after that. I love stories with a "sweep of history" in them and this one doesn't disappoint. If I had to fault the story anywhere, it would be not enough conflict/suspense for the humans in the first half. There's some, but not really enough for my taste. The alien story line makes up for it as does the second half, so I'll forgive the author and not subtract a star in my rating. for a jokey book, this took me WAY too long to read. i've already read P&P and the zombie element doesn't add enough to make this a more engaging read.

I love a lot FHB's stories, but I can't for the life of me understand why. The word 'heartwarming' comes to mind, also 'genuine,' and 'spiritual growth.' Okay, so I know the last mentioned is two words. Sue me (please don't!). I guess the thing I enjoy about these books is a simplistic writing style injected with a childlike wonder, a spoonful of humor, and a large dollop of hope that people can grow beyond the twisted fools that they contort themselves into. There is very little action. There is no real romance. But I think both children and adults will enjoy this book--children because they still have a sense of wonder about the world, and adults, because we so often forget that wonder, and need a reminder.

Pretty good. Written by a Canadian woman who travelled to Iran - basically a series of vinettes about the people (especially the women) that she meets. If you like travel memoirs or have a curisoity about Iran then you'll like it.

The premise is that a man has been invited to a birthday party for an artist who always invites as many guests as she is years old, and then has a friend invite a Mystery Guest to represent the coming year. The narrator of this story has been invited to be the Mystery Guest by his ex-girlfriend. The story is almost completely internal monologue by the broody, narcissitic, but still sort of likable narrator. Translated from the French, which makes me feel self-important to be able to note. :) It's short and sort of stream-of-consciousness. If it were longer, it might have been tedious, but I enjoyed it.

This book was an eye opener to me. I really like how the author describes the city and life in Mexico.
It's interesting to see how different people's lives are depending on what community they are born into. It's an interesting and easy-going book about Haruko and what her life is like and what she thinks about it in comparison to a more western life. It's light and enjoyable word fare.
Oh the boredom, the boredom! I never got what the big deal was.

Reading this book made me feel like was part-underachiever and part-psyched to get my sh#t together. Good food for thought - we'll definitely be getting a housecleaner after reading the arguments for "core competencies". an intriguing read for sure!

Was a great read! Made me laugh many times which was greatly needed after the "very" sad book I read just before this one. Besides I like a mystery intertwined with a love story.
