I cannot say enough about this, I just loved it!

Loved the adventure in the novel, sometimes frustrated by it because things seemed too obvious. Now I really want to read The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. Apparently tackles the same theories, more complex.

Written in 1985, this book argues that switching to television as the primary means for getting our news changed public discourse so that, because of the medium being used, it basically became impossible for us to engage in thoughtful, meaningful public discussion. That news and other so-called "serious" television became entertainment not through some sort of conspiracy or active choice on anyone's part but just because of the nature of the medium - that soundbites and emotional vs. rational arguments became dominant because of the visual nature of TV. And that as a result of the domination of TV, print media changed to become more TV-like (tabloid newspapers and the like). A lot of this whole discussion reminds me of the Amish approach to technology, which is to carefully think about how new technologies will impact family life before deciding whether or not to adopt them. Versus the approach of the rest of North American society, which is just to accept everything new, without much thought as to whether it might have a negative impact on society. And I can relate to the first approach - it's what I try to do in my personal life. But I don't think it's something that should be imposed on society as a whole. Sure, have the discussion, but people should get to make up their own minds about how they live their lives, even if that means they choose 6 hours of reality TV each night. One thing that I didn't realize was how relatively well-educated the first colonizers of North America were, and wonder how much of an impact this had on the development of North America. For example: "In this connection, it is worth citing a letter, dated January 15, 1787, written by Thomas Jefferson to Monsieur de Crève-coeur. In his letter, Jefferson complained that the English were trying to claim credit for an American invention: making the circumference of a wheel out of one single piece of wood. Jefferson speculated that Jersey farmers learned how to do this from their reading of Homer, who described the process clearly. The English must have copied the procedure from Americans, Jefferson wrote, "because ours are the only farmers who can read Homer."" In all, an interesting read, although parts of it came across as curmudgeony.
My second of two Sedaris reads. While I thought Me Talk Pretty was actually more enjoyable, you just can't go wrong with a book about a nudist colony. haha. Too funny. Again, I checked this one out on CD. I totally got into listening to the books on CD. In fact, at one point, I caught myself breathing the word, "Noooo" in disbelief, and at another point, I agreed outloud, "I know!" It's just so captivaitingly hilarious. I recommend this book to anyone with a fun sense of humor.

All-boy East coast prep school - think tweed, wet wool, competition. It all comes together to explore one year at the school where the boys compete to win the audience of a visiting author. The boys are "book drunk," obsessed with literature. "...one could not live in a world without stories." The lesson learned being that it takes honesty and self-awareness to not only write important literature but also to be at peace with yourself.

ارزش ادبی چندانی ندارد ولی به رغم کمبودهای اطلاعاتی اش، که دلیل آن نیز کاملا واضح است، نکاتی را به زندان ندیده ها می شناساند که با ارزش است و دانستن شان لازم.
loved this book. SO creepy....modern version of Passing.

This book helps explain the dichotomy between rich and poor countries - it all boils down to geography. Some societies were luckier than others in their access to rich agricultural land and adaptable animals, which is why they became the conquerers later on. I felt almost guilty while reading this, but glad to know a bit more how the world's societies began and succeeded or failed.
This is a forensic science thriller, and was a lot of fun, if you like that sort of thing. It was a quick read (I read it in one night), a little gory, but entertaining.

I very much enjoyed this book about Jane Seymour. Given to me as a gift from Jessica's parents, I admit I was first interested because I love the Showtime series The Tudors. Because of this love, I willingly read the tale of Jane Seymour. This book reads as a novel and has led me to want to research further about Jane's life. Happy reading!
