Lots of twists and turns. I read it because my mother told me to, now you should read it because I told you to.

It's a Dave Barry novel. His first, I think. He's hilarious. It's got a bit of bad language, because, as Dave mentions in the opening, bad guys don't speak kindly. It's a quick read, highly entertaining, and lampoons modern society and American culture just like Dave's columns.

Loved this book despite the slow start. Very deep, intellectual, and thoughtful. I'd recommend anybody looking to delve deep into the art world (visual, musical, or literary) read this book. My favorite quotes: “You should make the world pretty, Asher,” my mother whispered, leaning toward me. I could smell her breath. “I don’t like the world, Mama. It’s not pretty. I won’t draw it pretty.” “Then help me with the brushes,” he said. “A Jew should not only talk, he should also do.” Sometimes I think the Master of the Universe has another world to take care of, and He neglects this world, God forbid. To touch a person’s heart, you must see a person’s face. One cannot reach a soul through a telephone.” “So life would be precious, Asher. Something that is yours forever is never precious.” I stared at my reflection in the train window. Come, journey with me through the centuries, my eyes said. One learns to walk decades.

How she ends up normal is beyond me. Almost can't believe this is real and too sad to think that it was.
slit your wrists depressing...

This was a fun read but had terrible language. It was interesting to see how self centered a person can be! Unfortunately it reminded me just a bit about someone I'd worked with in DC a few years ago.
I’ve read a lot about the Holocaust over the years, and I have to say upfront that this isn’t the best book about that terrible time. But it does weave a story about an incident in the Holocaust that I had never before heard of: the Velodrome d’Hiver Roundup, which resulted in the murders of thousands of French children who just happened to be Jewish, with the full co-operation and involvement of the French government. The book is very sad, obviously, but it’s also an easy read. I started it around 10 or so one night and finished about 2 a.m. The book’s ending is more than a tad weak, but the story itself is compelling and the book is fairly well written. Anyone who is interested in the Holocaust is likely to be taken with this book.

Despite it's length, it took me quite a few sittings, just could not get into it. Was a little hard to follow, just didn't pull me in at all.

Voltaire is definitely laughing AT humanity in this merciless classic satire and you will be too. Great one-liners about religion, politics and the nature of human existence with an over-arching reminder never to take yourself too seriously. Still a good philosophical reality check even hundreds of years after its first publication.
The book was a joy to listen to. The narrator and the author captured a particular "southern" voice that appeals to me. I was reminded that we all have our own interpretations of history, even the facts of our own lives.
