Having grown up in Fargo, I could relate to many of the stories from this book. Fargo has a truly small town attitude. However, the author does seem to trivialize the extremely low incomes and the weather in the area - both of which are extreme enough to drive you away from the area. Yes, the people in the midwest are nice and sure they might spring for dinner/lunch if you forget your wallet, but don't count on that. Yes, you pump your gas first then pay. That is standard fare in Fargo. Yes unemployment is low - but if you can't find a job in your field, then you are screwed. (There are NO teaching jobs and the ones that do open up pay about 1/3 what I make now in California.) Yes, you can get a house for dirt cheap with a huge lot, IF you can find a job. Yes, the town floods and everyone gets together to help out. The Northern Prairie Culture does exist, but is it worth it? That's is up to each individual to decide. Overall, the little stories were cute in this book. I kind of disliked his little saying "How Fargo of you" especially since 90% of the rest of the world thinks that Fargo equals morons with accents. (Sorry, but it is true.) And the authors writing style was really difficult to read. He strayed off topic often and seemed overly dramatic. This book was just OK to me. I would be curious to think what people NOT from Fargo think about it, though... and good luck to the author trying to remove or change that stigma attached to the word Fargo.

Couldn't put this book down. I thought for sure I'd figured out the who-dun-it aspect, only to find an unexpected and fascinating detour to the ending. There were quite a few minor details pointing to my suspect, and the characters never considered him a suspect, so I thought that made him the perfect choice. Ah well. Kept me fascinated through the end. Definitely a good read.

The Devouring is one of my favourite series. i found i could connect with Reggie (which is a bit weird considering her character)but i just really liked the idea. very unrealistic but that's OK :)

It was good - Allende can definitely handle epic drama. But I much preferred Daughter of Fortune.

Oh dear, I wasn't going to use stars anymore. If you love vampires, victorian romances, steampunk universes you will love this fun little book. "...the detrimental effect on your marriage prospects, to be found unchaperoned in a library with a dead vampire!" Completely and utterly hooked...

WONDERFUL AND INTREGING. YOU WOULD NEVER GUESS WHO THE CONTINUATING CHARACTER IS AND WHY...UNLESS YOU HAVE READ HIS BOOKS. A MUST READ!
This is a book that creates a mystical world of political tension and speaks volumes in our modern world. Especailly with all the tension in Turkey today over secularism, this book illustrates how leaders can manipulate religious iconography and poltics. It's far more facinating than Istanbul, which is more or less a disjointed collection of random essays from his childhood. Snow, in contrast, tells a story. He creates a world more real than real life itself. One of the most facinating characters in Snow is the psudonymed Necip, who plays the role of the blind man in one of Beckett's plays. "If God does not exist, that means heaven does not exist either. And that means the world's poor, those millions of who live in poverty and oppression, will never go to heaven. And if that's so, then how do you explain allthe suffering of the poor? What are we here for, and why do we put up with so much unhappiness, if it's all for nothing?" he asks. Such thought-provoking discussions are sprinkled throughout the book. Highly recommended.
