I've probably read this book a hundred times; not because it's amazing, but because it holds a special place in my heart because it was the only novel in English I had the year I studied abroad. It's a cotton candy book--sweet, fluffy-- and let's face it- sometimes that's just what you want.

This book totally blew me away. Chabon is a genius with language and repeatedly impressed me with descriptions that were at once completely original and dead-on. Not to mention, he so vividly creates the fictional world of Jews living in Alaskan exile that I briefly wondered if there was some chapter of Jewish/Alaskan history I had somehow missed. As a mystery buff in general, and a fan of Chabon's novella The Final Solution in particular, I was happy to read a more developed work by the author in this genre. However, the resolution wasn't completely satisfying to me, and is the only reason I gave the book four stars instead of five. But ultimately, this book is more that just a whodunnit. It's about a group of outcasts and misfits and just plain imperfect people trying to figure out their relationship to the world and to each other, and it is a pleasure to watch them do so. From the guilt-plagued self-medicating protagonist, Detective Landsman, to his practical and ambitious ex-wife turned supervisor, Bina, to his half-Tlingit half-Jewish cousin and partner, Berko, to the homosexual heroin addict and would-be messiah, Mendel, Chabon creates a community on the verge of dissolution that won't soon be forgotten.

This was the first book I've read by James Buchanan and I admit I'm impressed. The way various elements of the story were woven together made this book hard to put down, with the story flowing smoothly along. Both Brandon and Nicky are interesting characters who despite their differences work well together as a couple. So the romance part of the book was easy to get into, and I couldn't help but wish for a happy ending for them. And the HFN end was a great way to end the book considering Brandon is still basically in the closet so anything else would have been unbelievable. At the same time, the crime solving plot line was worked seamlessly into the story, and kept my attention on the book, trying to figure out how everything will be worked out in the end. That said, I did have some slight problems with the book. Namely I was getting somewhat impatient at how during the investigation, when we saw how everything was starting to tie together, the various detectives and Nicky for some reason didn't appear to be working together so it felt like a case of the left arm not knowing what the right arm was doing. But, seeing as that's probably the case in real life it wasn't enough to hinder my enjoyment in the book. Another thing that bothered me was the "fight" we hear about Brandon and Nicky having. While I get that Brandon is closeted and paranoid about it, the way he treated Nicky was awful and I'm not sure a simple sorry should have fixed it. Thankfully his behavior improved as the book progressed, so again it didn't bother me too much in the end. On a side note, I was left wondering WTH did Nicky ever see in Jack.

Another excellent Saunders short story collection. "Bohemians" and "CommComm" alone are worth picking up the volume. In finishing In Persuasion Nation, I have now read all of his works, and for the first time, I felt I was being clubbed over the head with Saunders's critique of consumerism. Seems that most of his readers are already on board with that message, so why go over the top? I am indeed enamored with these themes and his treatment thereof, so perhaps I just missed the sensation of being clobbered previously.

Cannie is a character like no other. I just love her, and I totally have a crush on Dr. K! Jennifer Weiner has a great sense of humor, which is evident throughout this story. Good In Bed is not only a good read for the humor, but also for inspiration. Cannie struggles with her weight and negative self-image constantly in her life, and as you follow along on her journey you either find many instances where you relate and feel comforted knowing that you are not alone in your struggles or you learn from her strength and determination. By the end of the story I was sad it was over, but happy for Cannie that she had overcome so many things. Now I can't wait to see where life has taken her with Certain Girls.

I'm not quite sure about where in the world there is a demographic that doesn't find this book appalling at one point or another while reading, but you have to hand it to Mr. Kultgen, it is one hell of a story. I found myself laughing just as much as I found myself cringing, which I guess evens things out nicely. It honestly is never boring, and you can't help but be morbidly curious as to how it is all going to end up until the point where it becomes blatantly obvious. By that point you should be used to Mr. Kultgen's storytelling enough to actually want to know how it is all going to end. Yes, it is crass, and oftentimes purposely disgusting, but I actually, for the sake of face-value entertainment, enjoyed it. Read it at your own risk, I suppose, and leave your morality on the front cover.
