** spoiler alert ** Very interesting family/growing up story. The main character is an adult writing a memoir so the timeline jumps back & forth but mostly follows his childhood. His mother has mental health issues and is very unstable. His dad is a trucker and you find that he has another family elsewhere. Ultimately, he lives with the other family which creates some stability. Dufresne just has an interesting take on things, it has a melancholy sentiment to it and I wanted the author to prevail.

Very exciting suspense story! It's pretty dated, Cold War theme, but takes some very interesting twists and turns and always keeps the reader guessing. The dialog was my biggest obstacle...pretty corny. But a GOOD story!

All three books were perfect for summer reading.
PANDEMONIUM continues immediately after the ending of DELIRIUM. Lena is running away from the border after seeing her love Alex killed. She is half dead herself before she is found by a group of Invalids in the wild. The first quarter of the book was a bit depressing as Lena mourns and lets herself sorta waste away. She finally kicks herself into gear and gets back to her strong self. She of course is strongly against the cure and is now fighting on the side of the Invalids. The story flowed well. It jumps back and forth between Lena's time in the wild in the past and the present day events she is currently going through. I liked all the explanations of the wild and how everything worked around "camp". I enjoyed most of the new characters. The newest love interest kinda annoyed me. I know that Lena needs to move on with her life but I had a hard time seeing the romantic connection between her and Julian. They went through some tough things together but they didn't click with me. If she had to have a new love interest at all I would have liked to see her with someone from the wild. That is the only thing I didn't like about the story. I sorta saw the ending coming but still enjoyed it all the same, it will definitely shake things up. Everything was just going too good for something major not to happen. It is a bit of a cliffhanger though so be prepared to be left with your mouth open and mind racing. REQUIEM will be out in 2013.

Picture books are for everyone! This book speaks of the fascinating days and nights near the arctic circle in Alaska. This book describes the wildlife and what's going on with sun, clouds, light and darkness. I learned some things I didn't know before and considered what it would be like to live with constant daylight for the short summer. Did you know that when the seasons begin to change, they lose 7 minutes (or gain 7 minutes) of daylight PER day?? Amazing. Northern lights, sun dogs, blinks, alpenglow, flat light, glints, sparkles. Cool stuff! Oh, and I just love it when I'm reading a picture book to myself and one of my kids says, "Ooh, I have to read that book!" (I was reading this last night and my 12 year old said that to me.)

I have to admit after reading the first book in the series, I wasn't sure if I was going to continue...it was good, but not great, but i'm so glad I did...the second book was better than the first and the third the best in the series. This one finishes up the stories of the trio - Sara, Miki and Angie with Angie getting her HEA with her tiget, Nikolai. I felt sorry for Angie because she felt so out of place with her parents, and yet her interactions with Sara and Miki definately proved that you can have family that are not blood.
Without giving anything away, I liked how the author set up each chapter. I'm curious to see how they adapted the book to the big screen.

A great read! I maybe enjoyed Kite Runner a little bit more, because the info about Afghanistan was totally fresh to me. But this one is outstanding too.

Light but not memorable, the best parts were the memoir bits connecting the poems. The poems themselves, being extremely topical and, of course, light, don't hold up very well decades later. Trillin made me giggle a few times, and I enjoy his voice, but I think I'll stick to his food writing in the future.
