As far as Maguire goes, this book was a bit difficult to sink into. The protagonist was whiny and self-pitying. The story lines were tangled and snarled. Once I figured out what was going on, I combed my way through, but it was not as compelling as some of his fairy tale books.

E Myth Contractor gave me food for thought. It's a very compact book, but is choc full with insights, guidance and stories on how businesses fail and succeed. As a virtual assistant this book is invaluable in aiding my business setup.

What a cool book! I mean I really learned some things about the equation as well as the people and the world which helped create it.

She's amazing for being prolific, and I am sure there are legions of faithful Oatesians out there, but I rarely hear her books discussed as much as her activity in producing them. I own a dozen JCO books, and have finished only one, the shortest. This may be the cruelest thing a fellow writer can say, that she loses me almost always. Be that as it may, 'The Faith of a Writer: life, craft, art' is a book worth reading, if you are a writer. I can't imagine a reader having much to glean from it, unless he or she is that curious kind of reader who doesn't want to 'ignore the man behind the curtain' as the Wizard says. Throughout the book JCO seeks to remind us how normal, mundane, even coarse a writer is, and that writer, having learned one's craft well enough,is mere conduit for expression than generator. "Writing exists. Writers do not," she says. "No one wants to believe this obvious truth: the artist can inhabit any individual, for the individual is irrelevant to the art." If this were true in some perfect form, I would have been able to finish all of the novels I lifted from the bookshelf. Perhaps she has corrupted her perception of the creative act as a thing stepped from a sci-fi tale, where the essence of cognitive energy takes a human form to be transmittable, and in doing so finds itself limited by that form, which is usually human, just to communicate. The book has the value of a workshop conversation, albeit one attended by a freakishly informed speaker. Its worth must be individual, and for that I recommend it. Reads wuickly enough: done in a day.

A heart-wrenching story about atrocities enacted upon villagers in Nigeria. Global oil exploration has lead to the persecution of local citizens. Beautifully written; poignant and provocative.

I interviewed last summer with Simon & Schuster. Though I didn't score a job, they did let me stop by their "free book" shelf on the way out. This is one I picked up, and it may just prove that whole don't-look-a-gift-horse-in-the-mouth thing true. Maybe it'll make good beach reading this summer?

I have read most of David Sedaris' books, and I am so familiar with his family that I feel like I am reading about my own family. This was not one of my favorite of his books, but it is still hilarious. Any David Sedaris book is great to read when you are traveling. They keep you laughing during their entirety.
This is a lovely book and one of my favorites (with the exception of the marriage chapter...humph). C.S. Lewis is an amazing writer and I love all his metaphor usages.
