This book made me realize how many times a day I think about my weight. Sad since I could be doing something much more productive instead.

I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! The action in this book picks up immediately where Angelique in Revolt (Book 4) left off. Angelique had found shelter working in the home of a Huguenot merchant in La Rochelle, but they are now facing imminent arrest from the King's men for their religious beliefs. The Huguenots flee, but there's only one captain around willing to take them to the Indies - the mysterious pirate Rescator. That would be the mysterious pirate Rescator who bought Angelique at a slave auction, but she ran away before he really gained possession. Think there might just be a wee bit of tension between the two? Things really heat up on deck when the townspeople realize the ship has gone just a bit too far north for the West Indies and tensions reach the boiling point... "They were in the midst of a desert of mists and silence, an icy limbo hustling the living to their death." Well, you know I can't tell. This was a lot of fun, with most of the action taking place on board ship and plenty of dirty dealings, twists and turns and more. I thought the last 100 or so pages dragged on a bit with too much telling instead of showing as some older back history was covered. The next book in the series is The Countess Angelique (Book 6), but if you are looking for a break, this one ends on an up-note and would be a good place to stop.

Excellent Historical Romance

I didn't like the book. It offers childish tips what products to avoid in the supermarket (the US customers would probably starve if they'd used all of the rules). Readers looking for relevant information on eating well and nutrition will be disappointed.
I put off reading this book-club-ish book because I knew it had to do with WWII and I was worried it would be either a depressing read or a sisterhood-of-the-traveling-pants-cheesy-girl-power story. (That last worry was because of the title.) Thankfully it was neither. I thought it was a well-told and well-researched story concerned more with the day-to-day life of those in a German-occupied area, plus a sweet love story that kept me guessing (to a point).

I think this is Miller's best work. Relieved of the atom bomb that was Cancer, Miller delivers a series of thunder claps to the world that uproot all certainty and confirm one's worst nightmares. Nightmare is a good word for what he put down-- an introspective nightmare, but born with the wisdom of a self-recovered soul. A man who has rescued himself with the life-boat of his imagination. Here is Miller in the main thrust of his life's work, which was, one could argue, to innoculate himself from the demons he was fed growing up. Miller never liked the taste of poison, which is often so mis-understood about him. But he understood the necessity of purging his veins so as to return to his natural state of grace...in contrast to the explosion of Cancer, Capricorn this is the contemplative purge.... long, painful, and worth every moment of it, because the result is simply sublime. This book decides whether Miller hit his mark in life or not and this verbose young man says, "yay."
More interesting in theory than in practice.
** spoiler alert ** I loved the s*** out of Clarisse. I would have loved this book if the best-developed character hadn't been picked off so early.
