Creepy Story. Bliss and I have the same problem. We talk to the kid whose alone when we're knew without realizing that sometimes, there's a REASON why they're always alone. (and sometimes it gets the best of you) The ending was tragic and hasn't quite left me yet.

A classic of the 20th Century. One you should read before you die, but only when you're ready to shut yourself off from the world for many days. Flawed, yes, and perhaps too long-winded at times (reduced by a third it would have been perfect) but this is an important, mind-expanding trilogy that you can absolutely lose yourself in. It shows you what a novel can achieve and it opened the door for so many great writers, such as John Irving and Salman Rushdie, etc etc

This would be, I think, an excellent read for younger kids. It's got automotons, magicians, clocks, machines, and old movies, all fine little tidbits that I thoroughly enjoyed. Oh and pictures - despite the book being ~500 pages, it's an easy read at 26,000 words. With that said, I'm not a kid and I wanted a bit more in terms of characterization, plot/conflict, etc. I just didn't entirely buy the main character Hugo's obsession with his so-called "secrets" nor did he, really, evolve as a character. So, as a kid, yeah, great. But as an adult? I never felt drawn in to the narrative; whether the pictures or the formatting or the lack of depth or simply the short length, I did not find myself pulled into the world. Which is a bit disheartening. P.S. The film adaptation of this movie is being directed by Martin Scorsese. Yep, he's directing a family movie. Can't wait to see it.
