What a disappointment! When I look for Jane Austen spin-offs, I like them to have substance, clean language, and tasteful displays of affection. This book has none of these things. The characters were mere caricatures of the original book with some of them not even remotely like the original. Most of the book is set in the San Francisco area--England is a sideline. Jane and Bingley are surgeons??? So bizarre. And why is Elizabeth's best friend a gay Mr. Hurst? Lizzy's hatred of Darcy changed overnight, rather than over months. And they acted on their attraction before really getting to know or love each other--with a LOT of PDAs (so not Darcy's personality). Typical modern romance theme there. And I really don't enjoy seeing the F-bomb every other page or so. The idea of Darcy being a judge and Lizzy an attorney was inspired--they played well off each other in the beginning, but that's as far as the inspiration went.

met the author at his seminar in Rhinebeck, NY.
A wonderful graphic novel. Made me late for work as I couldn't put it down. It strikes close to my half-Mex heart. Outside of a needless prologue, the development of the plot is excellent. The book starts out as just another navel-gazing indie comic and evolves into a complex and searing personal journey. If only her art was as lovely as her writing. Though the simplicity of the artwork may have helped draw me in by lowering expectations.

I don't read many books, but for some reason this one was a bit of a let down especially after all the fascinating reviews. For me it read like a textbook written by an engineer. With so much business/industry vernacular as interesting and ground breaking the content may be, it was boring and a struggle to read. I'll try again another time, maybe when I'm in a more analytical mood.

I thought this was a heartwarming, but sometimes heart rendering, story of a young girl (Lily) coming to terms with what's left of her biological family and choosing a new extended family. I like books that tie the "message" of the story into a larger story of daily life and I thought that the author's choice to use beekeeping as the backdrop for this story worked well. The style of writing in this book is quite lyrical and easy to read and while the message is no longer cutting edge, and therefore didn't stem a new line of thinking for me, those who haven't read extensively about personal stories of the civil rights movements may find it more mentally stimulating than I did. For me, the strong point of the book was the characters. I seem to be gravitating towards stories of strong women this year, and this book was no exception. The cast of characters provided many unique examples of how to be a positive and strong role model to a troubled young girl, without preaching about it. I liked how the author attached an every-day mysticism to her characters, so that you got the feeling that there was meaning in the most mundane activities during the story.

Another great book by David Baldacci. I love the Michelle Maxwell/Sean King stories.
Ashfall Mike Mullin Tanglewood Press, October 2011 ISBN 978-1-933718-55-2 Hardcover (e-ARC) Alex, a fifteen-year-old living in Cedar Falls, Iowa, is alone for the weekend, having browbeat his parents into letting him stay home while they take his little sister to visit relatives in Warren, Illinois. He’s looking forward to doing his own thing (mostly geek stuff) for a few days but, after several hours of online questing on World of Warcraft, Alex’s life changes forever. Nine hundred miles away in Yellowstone Park, the supervolcano has exploded and Alex’s house is shattered by what feels and sounds like incoming artillery. Digging himself out, he struggles to escape the blaze and finds shelter with neighbors. The noise, the continuous explosions, the fear of the unknown are nearly overwhelming. All telephone communication is out so Alex has no way to reach his family. Then the ash begins to fall. And the darkness comes with it, along with a sulfurous stench. Two days later, water flow is gone. Finally, the first looters come and the resulting terror and devastation give Alex the resolve to find his family no matter what it takes. The journey ahead will be long and fearsome, a nightmare Alex will face alone until he meets 17-year-old Darla who has a maturity far beyond her years. Will these two survive the journey or will this nightmare prove to be too much? I have a particular fondness for post-apocalyptic and disaster-related fiction and have, I think, developed a discerning taste over many years of reading such novels. Ashfall is one of the very best I’ve read and is more remarkable because it’s Mullin‘s first book. His descriptions of the conditions, environmental and human, that will most certainly follow such a cataclysmic event have the ring of truth and he maintains a level of intensity and despair, as well as strength and hope, that are difficult for many writers to convey without being “over the top”. It’s a compelling tale with dystopian elements and what could be an overpoweringly dark story is alleviated by flashes of humor and a bit of romance. In fact, the way Mullin handles the developing relationship between Alex and Darla was especially appealing to me as it is realistic and tasteful. Parents should not be concerned when their teens pick up this book—it was written with them in mind. Ashfall is the first of a trilogy and I’m looking forward to Ashen Winter in October 2012. In the meantime, I’m waiting till Ashfall is released so I can buy a copy for my bookcase and I’ll be including it in my list of Top Five favorite books for 2011. I strongly recommend it to adults and teens alike. Reviewed by Lelia Taylor, August 2011.

Another great addition to the Morganville Vampires. I found it a little slow to start, but the further you get into the book, the faster it sucks you in to the point that you just don't want to put the book down. New characters: Mr. Bishop and his two flunkies Ysandre and Francois, they make even Oliver seem like a good guy. New interesting things happen in this book, will be interesting to see if it's explained in a future book.

OK, i got sucked into another book series that will be made into movies. Thanks, Tina :P! Fun story, quick read. I do find myself slightly irritated that books these days are written with the intent of being made into movies (vs. books written as books). But, I'll probably still read the next ones.
