Interesting social review on why Caucasian men like Asian woman, but written in a professional way. Good theories and research done by the author.

On the top of my shoulders sits a box made of bone. Within that box is a greyish organ with the texture of jelly, the size of a melon (canteloupe, not water) that controls pretty much everything that I do. Billions of microscopic connections allow me to generate thoughts, process input, communicate, control posture and interpret data with a speed that is not matched by the fastest and biggest computers we have yet invented. The brain is a phenomenon and should be a thing of constant marvel but we take it for granted as long as it does what we expect. Steven Pinker has written a fabulous, dense book to try and generate a level of knowledge about the Mind that increases the sense of wonder whilst explaining some of the processes involved.
very quick read, ok

A brilliantly bizarre cult classic that had me hooked right to the very end. A definite must-read.

I picked up this book to see if I would like Jim's writing, in the hopes of getting into the much raved Dresden Files series. Parts of this book were downright awesome, and other parts dragged on a little bit. The characters were good, even though in many ways 'stock' for fantasy novels: a young adult/child main character with an 'issue' that makes him different than everyone else, a loving family for the child, an 'alien' enemy race, a benevolent king, a crafty manipulator for a bad guy. That being said, the characters are well fleshed out and they act more realistically than in most fantasy novels. The plot moves along nicely, and even though I didn't get into it as much as I did with Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind I was amazed at how I kept chewing through the pages waiting to see how they were going to handle the events that were unfolding.

I am never very sure about books that start at the end and work backwards, I can see why Roffey did it because you need to know what happens in order to build any sympathy for George but for me, it didn't work. After the first section I could pretty much piece the rest together myself and I found the prose turgid and not particularly well written. Her political history of Trinidad is interesting and there are some good points made about the British and our political tactics which made the book more enjoyable. Good holiday reading although it took me less than a day to finish so don't expect it to last a while. This one won't be coming home on the aeroplane!
