The is a fascinatingly morbid series. I couldn't put it down. I loved reading it. I love even more that I'm done.

It's been a little while since I read my first Jennifer Haigh book, The Condition, and I almost forgot how good of a writer she is. I went to bed early several nights, just so I'd have more time to read this book. Real characters, engrossing storyline, and beautiful language. Will be reading her two earlier novels soon.

This book wasn't what I thought it would be, both when I started, and once I had finished. The author's "prologue" confused me so much that for the first half at least, I thought it was based on a true story. Perhaps I am just too gullible? And then, the ending shocked and surprised me, and made me think of and feel about the book differently than I expected. My favorite part of the book was the first section, about zoology and living in a zoo. I also enjoyed reading about Pi's interactions with Richard Parker. By the time I reached the end, I feel sort of like something was taken away from me. I think it is going to take another reading of this book to really understand what it means, but that will have to wait for another day.
Others reviewers have expressed my feelings about the book; essentially, it felt like an outline, rather than a fully fleshed novel about real people. Perhaps Bender was held back by the magic realism she chose to use to tell her story, but why use it, then? I found the book to be an angry, sad exploration of one idea: the sins of the parents ruin their children. But nobody came to life in the novel for me.

1968. This book was pretty good. It's about a kid who freaks out on acid and recovers. A little moralistic, but cool scenes in the Village and on the subway. Hippies and the Digger's Free Store. Pleasingly dated. They make the scene and say groovy.

Kind of disappointed in the book. Let me unsatisfied.
It was typical Alexie.

This book has been fiercely anticipated by nearly every 3rd to 6th grader in the land for months. I found it to be the least enjoyable of the three "Wimpy Kid" books, it seems to be missing much of the quirky humor that made the first two hits with many tweens. This opinion was backed up by my own tween, who said the book was "just okay...nothing special, and not as good as the first one".
