This is a fabulously engaging read, and is more of a stream-of-consciousness easy-reading novel than a collection of art essays. The author is interested in not only established High Art works, but is also interested in everything from the eccentric light bulb collector to the Victorian era arctic expedition photographer. He unravels and contextualizes artists' motivations by telling their stories simply, with ease and humor.

I liked all the Greek references and her characters in this one, it was nothing like her first book but certainly it was sad to put down, I wished she had more to read.

Kind of a neat history of Mobuto Sese Seko the great dictator of the Congo. If you are interested in African politics and history then go for it.

well, you have to hand it to the french and english. what a bunch of imperialist clowns! i did like the "adventure" and exploration bit about the niger, but like most history books i read i always want a little bit more when I'm done.

Great handbook for any nonprofit marketer or anyone whose job included doing some marketing for their nonprofit. It's an easy read. People without any marketing background can follow along. Even for someone with a marketing background, this is still worth a read. I have an MA in Communications with a focus on marketing. While I was aware of the many comms concepts and theories, I still found it useful because of all the case studies, practical checklists and suggestions, and suggested programs and online tools. Another great thing is that it has a companion website so you can get the latest tools and recommended sites when the ones mentioned in the book are already outdated.
Some graphic novel. Didn't expect it to be so serious and touching.

This is well written, but the subject matter was just too intense for me. As a professional in the field of child abuse prevention, I think of myself as aware of such issues, but I was surprised at how disturbing this story was and how personally it affected me. The story chronicles the childhood (ages 4-11) of Anna, who experienced physical and verbal abuse, conditions of neglect, and sexual abuse from both adult and child perpetrators. Perhaps I am more sensitive to this topic as I have young children of my own. I had planned to read Meg Tilly's other book, Gemma, but I have heard that Gemma is more graphic that Singing Songs and I will not read it.
Michael Santos writes about his prison experience (he's serving hard time for drug offenses and is nearing the end of a long sentence) and the many ways in the which the prison system fails its prisoners. This is a difficult read, partly due to the graphic subject matter (he's no-holds-barred). Santos makes a strong case for the rehabilitation of the system and I found myself outraged at times throughout the book. A very good read.
