Second in the series. I liked the first one better. Very very quick read. But there was a spot where I literally found myself comepletely lost and thought, "What?" I don't know. Maybe it was me.

Incredibly arduous to read, this book has three main topics that the author writes incessantly about - food, the pint, and wanking. It'll leave you as frustrated as the author must have been by his childhood - and perhaps that is the point.

This is definitely one of my most treasured childhood books. My dad and I loved saying "NO NO JOAN!" together. Now in my early thirties, my dad and I still laugh about that silly cat named Joan.

Grrr! Why does Oprah have to slap her name on all the significant literary works!?! Read it.... and not because O told you to.

This was just as much completely unreasonable fun as the other one. Maybe more, because I think this is the one with the handbag, and boy, do I know about that hand bag thing. Probably why my father gave this to me in the first place, and who knew that my father of all people would know me so well? (yes, we kinda insult each other with the books we give each other. It's a family tradition and it doesn't have anything to do with our actual reading preferences. Or our relationships with each other. Although, okay, maybe it does. Although, I gave my mother DVDs for christmas, so what does that say?) I tell myself that I'm completely not like shopaholic, because the way she ends up bankrupt all the times drives me insane because it is SO SO stupid, but really, I'm so her. Only without the bankruptcy.

I felt that this book missed the 'magic' of the original WMBH. Kunstler is a strong, clear writer, and this book was pretty good, but no where near my top 10 list which includes WMBH. Others reviewing this book did not like the mysticism included in the book, but I thought it added to the story (sort of like in The Stand). The pace of the story was good, and with several different story lines that converge at the end of the book, Kustler was able to create chapter-end cliff-hangers that kept me up too late. Worth reading, but I’d be bummed if I spent money on it.

This book was a downer and never really resolved anything. I'm surprised its on so many of my friends lists. I would not recommend it.

** spoiler alert ** She sees him, lusts after him, marries him. He rapes her on her wedding night, he is full of lice, he terrorizes his peasants (kills them when he suspects someone is robbing him), he ignores her. And then, one night she bathes him, he behaves like a normal being and is a little gentle, and she thinks: "I love him ". Oh, no. I couldn't keep reading, even knowing that the "taming" has just begun. The wedding night is one of the must demeaning scences I've read so far.
