** spoiler alert ** I feel like I'm being cruel for giving this book only four stars, but it just left too many questions unanswered. I'm one of those people who can get very attached to a book and/or the world that a book creates. I'll sit and read for hours and hours making sure I get all the questions I have answered. But I still have quite a few unanswered ones for Forever. Maggie Stiefvater has a tendency of being very poetic when she writes. She'll take something very ordinary and make me see it in a whole new way. I could be walking down the street, stop in front of something that I've seen every day for the past year and really see it for the first time. I also love her amazing understanding of her characters. Characters: Sam is my book crush right now. He is this amazingly complicated, fearful boy. And when I say boy, I mean boy. Sam had a lot of growing up to do in this book (even though he is nineteen.) He needed to take charge to defend his pack, but he had this deep fear of failure that held him back. That part of the book was too slow to me. A lot of times I wanted to tell him, "We get it. You need help. But the pack needs help too. YOUR help." He got it eventually, but it took a while. One thing that never changed was his pure, genuine love for Grace. The fact that she had needed him is what made him a man. Grace is already very much an adult. She had to deal with the lack of parenting when she was younger. She now had to deal with her parents trying to take over completely after she went missing. What was hardest for her was keeping the werewolf secret from her loved ones. She really learns how to stand her ground with her parents. Grace became complete in this book. Isabel is the character that I felt myself caring about. She has been deeply hurt. Hiding it and being a complete jerk is the only way she knows how to deal with it. Cole isn't the kind of person that I think she should be with. I understand that they can relate in a way that others can't because they both have been scared but I don’t think that that was enough. She says, “Cole is like poison to her”. Throughout the book Isabel loses her hard edge and really starts to feel again. Cole frustrated me. I wanted him to do well, but at some points he seemed hopeless. He trying to find himself, but it kept making me mad all the things he would do that made Sam's life herder. He had a major role in the book, and I'm glad that Maggie made him smart, but for some reason I just couldn't truly like him. Science was the life he thought he didn't want to return to, but ended up loving it because he had a purpose. After that his heart was in the right place and I could like him more. I've always felt that the best books are the one when have characters changed by the end. Maggie did that perfectly. That is the only thing that I liked about the end though. It's like she never truly finished. If she wanted to end like that it would have been better to end with Shiver. Here are some of the questions I still have: > What happens to Grace? Does Cole ever cure her? > What happened to the girl that was in the SUV with Cole and Victor? > Does the policeman that helped them have much communication with them? > Do Sam and Grace ever get married? > How is the relationship between Grace an her parents after she moves out? > Do Cole and Isabel work out? Apart from the ending, I LOVED this book. It was a page turner that made me care about the characters and took me to another world; I highly recommend it.
