This is the best book. It's been a while since I read it but I wanted to remember how much I loved it. It's the journal (fictional but based on a real person) of a girl in the pioneer west. It is just wonderful.
this title is very misleading, the people pictured are not remotely famous.

Brilliant. I have to say, I'm still befuddled by people who don't like to read or think about books about people who like to read books and think. Watch for Byatt's own intrusions to remark on her craft, Alexander Wedderburn's meditations on the phrase 'Still Life,' Frederica and Marcus and Byatt wondering at various points, and often together, about the nature of metaphor. A perfect gift for expectant mothers.
funny–more of a YA though, kinda chick-lit-ish with “Footnote asides from different characters in the story”, left itself open for a series type following, Jaffe isn’t a bad writer, just now quite there yet and still needs a bunch of work

I think I may be the odd man out here, but I haven't always enjoyed Atwood's books. However, I thought this one was great. She blended just the right mix of mystery and reality to keep me interested. I really felt as though I could relate to this characters. Definitely reccomended.

A charming narrator and one extremely evocative and memorable section of the book. Overall, well-written and readable.

I truly enjoy Elizabeth Gaskell's books. It is very interesting to me how she combines the points of view of both the working and the "master" class, and yet doesn't blame one or the other for the struggles and the problems that arose out of the industrial revolution in England. On both sides there are unsavory characters, and on both sides there are honest men and women doing the best they can in their understanding. I like how at the end of this book as with North and South, the workers and the masters seem to have a minor meeting of the minds. Knowing that it isn't going to change everything, I like the fact that she allows some to see others perspectives and grow in understanding of a different life. As I listen I am struck with the desire for today's "do gooders" to see that large companies aren't always the bad guys and that the unions aren't always right.
One of the more difficult subjects to keep interesting over 500 pages, Morrison managed to describe battle after battle with sufficient tales of individual bravery, commentary on the significance of tactics and engagements, and grandiose, intense descriptions of incredible accomplishments, that it was actually a riveting page-turner. I came away from the book not only with a much more complete understanding of the naval aspects of World War II, but also a strong appreciation for the fantastic scale of the war and all that it entailed. It's simply incredible what the US and other nations accomplished when they truly put their mind to either conquering or saving the world. My only complaint, and a relatively minor one at that, was that Morrison often assumed that the reader was familiar with the various types of ships and airplanes employed by the different sides, and it would have been useful to have an appendix or running descriptions.

Winchester weaves a mix of social and natural history in his lead-in to an account of this major volcanic eruption from the end of the 19th Century. This book is satisfying in its coverage of geology, and of the Dutch colonial history in Southeast Asia. I read this upon a recommendation from someone else who also enjoyed it.
