My father was born and raised in Northern Ireland. My grandmother still lives there. I remember visiting Belfast in the early 80's, when armed checkpoints etc were common. I enjoy history, especially history which has touched my family, so the partitioning of Ireland and the resulting "Troubles" are interesting to me. My great-grandfather signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912, which was in protest of the Home Rule Bill that had been introduced. The years following that event, and WWI were filled with violence and anger in Ireland as the IRA formed and catholics fought for their freedom from English rule. Those years make up the bulk of this book. Eileen O'Neill is a young girl living in Ulster with her family. Her father is a dreamer, a musician who is much better at the craic than he is at running the family farm. After a series of tragedies, Eileen and her younger brother find themselves homeless and alone. Eileen starts working at the local mill to support her family and to save money to one day reclaim what she has lost. As she grows up, she becomes attached to two very different young men. The warrior brother of her best friend who is passionate about Irish freedom, no matter the cost, and the son of the owner of the mill, a protestant and Quaker. As the years pass and the violence in Ireland grows, she finds herself caught between the two men who have taken different sides in the battle for her heart and her country. While the ending was a bit predictable, overall, I found the book interesting and easy to read.

** spoiler alert ** Melinda Speaks: I wasted the last weeks of August watching bad cartoons. I didn't go to the mall, the lake, or the pool, or answer the phone. Ihave entered high school with the wrong hair, the wrong clothes, the wrong attitude. and I don't have anyone to sit with. I am Outcast. Speak. Is a wonderful book. Its great, touching, and realistic. Speak is great: The story is about a young teen Name Melinda who is out going, smart, fun, has lots of friends and isnt afraid to jus have fun. Live the life as a kid. But one summer it all changed when she and her 3 best friends go to a party. while they're all just having fun a high school guy asks if Melinda wanted to dance she excepts and go out onto thedance floor. Melinda is having a such a good time she doesn't realize that all of her friends are vall scattered out about the party she coninues o dance. But one friend is still with her. Rachel. Wacthing Melinda out on the dance ffloor while she to is dancing. As the party goes on the Older guy takes Melinda out side. While stil dancing. He leads her toward his car. Where tress are hanging overby. Beacuse the hous at whch the party is taking place is located in the woods. Speak is Touching: He then kisses her and she is shy at first but then not for long. Feeling as though she can trust him they go into his car. Starting to feel uncomfortable she tells him to get off of her but he doesn't. Later on the high school guy leaves her and continoues on to the party. While Melinda is shakin up looking for her scattered friends. whom she cant find she decides to call the police. Not a good idea. Calling the cops at a party is not a good idea. Where there are teenagers who are probably drinking, and bringing the aops into this isnt a good idea. When the cops arrive Rachel tries to find Melinda and when she does she soon realizes that elinda was the one who called. She asks her why? And Melinda not able to speak Rachel smacks her and thninks she bailed on the party. Then pulls her out the house to catch's up with the rest of they're friends. Speak is Realistic: When high school starts Melinda doesn't have any friends or any associates. All 3 of her best friends havent talked to eachother after that night at the party. Since she lives in a samll town so mostly all of the peoplewho was at the party goes to the same high school. And they're all mad at her to for the reason. So starting off high school witha building full of people who dont like you and who are your enemies. But Melinda does find a relationship in one person. Her lab partner Dave. He doesn't really care for not because of yhe party but because he wants to succed in everthing he does and having a partner who quite and doesn't do anything ges him mad. But later on in time they become friends. As time goes by Melinda tries to tell Rachel that the guy she is going out with is the one that hurt her at the party. That he raped her but Rachel doesn't belive her . As school comes to an end dave and her become closer and Melinda is at her hide out that she mad in school. And while she is taking her stuff out so she acn take them home guess who comes through? Speak comes to an conclusion: Andy the guy that ruined her life comes in that's who. Andy yells at her because he is mad that Melind told Rachel that he raped her. Which he did. But he doesn't like it he says that she was asking for it. Melinda scared and trapped in her little room that has only one door way and no windows. Andy blocks the way and screams at her and she trying to get away he pull her and she is no match to get out of grasp. But the one of Melida's old friend says who's in there? While Andy is still holding her a piece of broken glass from one of Melnida's project that Andy as broken. She grabs it and stabs him in the arm he lets her go and she kicks him out of the way and runs out the door and down the school hallway. As one of her old friend fom the lacross team is out in the hallway with the rest of the members. As they watch as Melinda runs dowthe hallway. They see Andy come out the room. And they start hitting him with their rackets and are yelling at him, and a teacher comes down to see whats going on. Melinda's mom picksher up and wants her to tell her everything. As they sit in the car Melinda starts from the party all the way down to the present. Speak so real, so touching, and so great that it's not even funny.
