An extremely well-researched book that demonstrates how very little we can possibly know about Cleopatra and how much the legend of Cleopatra likely differs from her reality. Her history was first recorded 100 years after the fact by Romans (who were her enemies) and then embellished from there. Schiff does an admirable job of sifting through the embellishments to tell the most likely--if not always the most passionate or romantic--story. I added this book to my Kindle after seeing Jon Stewart interview Schiff on The Daily Show. I was expecting the book to be a bit more of a "popular" history in the vein of Erik Larson, so the only reason this wasn't a 5-star read for me was because it didn't have the narrative flow that I was anticipating. Had I read this for a history course, though, and been expecting the more academic history that it is, it would have been 5 stars I think. And I don't mean to imply that Schiff's voice is absent, because it certainly is not. One of the things I enjoyed most about this book was her occasionally sarcastic tone. Before reading this book the extent of my knowledge of Cleopatra came from Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra. I was shocked to find that some of the most dramatic and emotional moments of the play come directly from the historical sources. I loved the driving concept behind this book: digging through the male-written source documents that attempt to depict Cleopatra as primarily a sexually promiscuous, witch-like temptress to try to get closer to the truth: that Cleopatra was likely a shrewd, intelligent, admired and creative (if sometimes vicious) ruler.

Easy and enjoyable. You begin, you finish, then you're like, where did the time go?

Very clever, and very funny. In this book, Lydia Adamson delivers some truly wonderful characters--and by "characters" I mean unusual, one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-duplicated weirdos. The protagonist, Alice Nestleton, is a cynical yet oddly fanciful forty-something with a love of cats and a disregard for how a murder investigation "should" run. Tony Basilio, Alice's ex-lover, defies all explanations with his antics. Alice's cats, Bushy and Pancho, aren't really main players, but they deserve mention anyway. I was honestly reminded of my own cat as I read about them. The big case is certainly a big one, all right. Former ballet star, Peter Dobrynin, was found shot to death at Lincoln Center on Christmas Eve, and everyone's a suspect. When Alice's friend Lucia is arrested, Alice is called in to clear her name. And I can tell you right now, the resolution is not what you'd expect. The more I think about it, the more I really loved this book. It was a good mystery with great characters, priceless one-liners, a curve ball of an ending...I just might have to read the other books in the series!

Wow, this was a riveting page-turner. Read all 420 pages in one night!! I just couldn't put it down. From the back cover: "It had to end in blood. Family therapist Kate Sinclair, healer of lost souls, perfect wife and mother, has suddenly become trapped in a nightmare of her own. Her teenage daughter has just discovered sex, lies, and rebellion. He ex-boyfriend has returned to threaten her marriage. Her once peaceful hometown is being awakened by chilling headlines: "Another woman is missing". Kate can sense the darkness gathering around her, can see the mistakes, the missteps, the missing pieces. She is afraid of what tomorrow will bring. Enter Colin Friendly, a man on trial for abducting and killing thirteen woman...the handsome, "misunderstood" sociopath Kate's troubled sister plans to marry. Colin loves women to death. He can't wait to see Kate and the girls again. One dark night when they are home alone, disarmed, ready for bed....." (By the way, this novel is FICTION so there is no gory details whatsoever- just a real page-turner).

Jean Genet is the forgotten hero of 20th Century literature. Written far too early to imagine, Genet's lurid, scandelous and down-right arousing descriptions of petty-crime, poverty, murder and gay sex in the underbelly of early century European cities and their respective prisons is... well... hot. For further indulgence into the amazing course of Genet's life as an outlaw, please also read Edmund White's biography, Genet.

I really loved the tenderness throughout the utterly disastrous situations in which the family members found themselves. Maybe we all secretly root for the healing, resolution and tenderness despite how addictive it is to be a part of the dysfunctional family.
always keep me interest

This, #3 in the Laramie series, is a charming tale about a woman doctor in the early 1900's. It starts out at the Kansas Medical School, but quickly moves to Chicago when Katherine Davis, M.D. is given the opportunity to work with Jane Adams for one year. There, she meets a man, but is he the right man? A year later things change. Check-out this book to see exactly how things change -- it was a pleasant surprise for me.
this book changed my world. i have not looked at writing the same way since. an amazing example of how art and literature can mesh to impact the reader. it took me over a month to read the entire book (without deciphering all the codes and finding all the easter eggs) and it was worth every second.
