My rating for this book wavered between 3 and 4 stars, but in the end I boosted it up to 4. This book about seemingly ordinary people thrust into extraordinary situations pulled me into it right at the beginning. There were moments, though, where the momentum slowed, but isn't life like that? The plot makes the reader stop and think about life, the choices one has made, and the expected and not-so-expected outcomes that shape our experiences and our existence. I loved the last lines (which do not really give away any of Violet's story): "Who'd have ever thought a shunned, husky-voiced, one-armed, big-chinned girl with a hive of bees in her head could live a life so full of miracles? But we all have, when you think of it. I'd love to hear about yours; the big ones, the little ones, and those miracles you haven't even recognized yet. Look, the waitress is putting on another pot of coffee. Come on, your turn."

this was one of my first chick-lit novels and I was surprised to find that I actually loved it. I think it is one of the few novels that doesn't really pass judgment on over-weight people when using one as a main character.
I thought the imagination of Gregory Maguire to come up with the other side of Wizard of OZ was brillant. The book dragged at points but it really made the Wicked Witch relatable and likable, actually made me dislike Glenda a lot. I did get confused at the end especially on how it lined up with the Wizard of Oz but it was still a wonderful and easy read. I'm interested in what Son of a Witch will be like

I was just lukewarm about this book. I thought it was an incredibly creative concept, with just the right amount of macabre to make me not want to read it alone at night, but I wasn’t thrilled with the ending. It seemed a little too tidy. With all of the lengths Gaiman went to to ensure that the supernatural elements of the story were believable, I just didn’t feel like the ending was very credible.

Where to start? Yes, this is a richly imagined, well researched, unique world and generally an enjoyable read. Some exceptional, nuanced characters are presented and there are some twists to the plot that are very clever. However, while the quality of writing is good, I would not label it great. When you produce a 900 plus ( around there? I'm on a Kindle) page book I should be savoring the language and word choice. A lot of this just felt like sloppy writing. If I read "he wore.." plus the colors and the description of the sigil one more time, I'm going to lose it. Try incorporating the description into the action taking place in the scene. Seriously, this really began to bug by page 700. Also the descriptions of food? Not necessary all the time. See Sieg Larsen for same issues with useless food descriptions. We get it! Lisbeth likes pizza from convenience stores!! Sorry, I digress. Please read Raymond Carver, people. The multiple points of view are ambitious. But, many of the characters are simply not interesting enough to hold the perspective. Sansa? really she needed her own perspective? However, Tyrion more than balances her out as does Jon Snow. Great characters. I feel like I have to say something about the rape/violence/general objectification of women. I get it that this is set during some pseudo Middle Ages and yes, girls (not women) were married at a very young age to older men. And everyone grows up very fast. But yikes there is a lot of sex with young girls and older men. See Pillars of the Earth for exact same issue but to a far greater and creepier degree. There are 7 books in the series, and I feel pretty exhausted after making it through this one. Was this overall enjoyable? Yes. Would I recommend this? Only for hardcore readers, fantasy fans. Will I one day eventually make it through the series? Possibly, after an extended recovery period.
This would be a good potty book, but my child decided it was funny to kick her potty and be stubborn like Bartholomew. Not a plus for me.

I love James Patterson books! This was a fast paced, can't put down novel. I wonder though...why does he likes to write books with other authors. I have read so many Patterson novels, I can almost pick up ideas that came from the other author!
Christopher Paolini is an outstanding author. What a great plot, such an intriguing book. I love it!
