What the hell. I read and read and read about his stupid trial and I guess I missed the punchline. What the hell happened! Is that the point? I did enjoy the suspense... Ugh.

This was really sad. It really showcased the ravages of drug use.
I'm a *big* Hemingway fan, one of the favorite things I own being my 1st edition copy of Old Man & the Sea, so it was a foregone conclusion that, if written well, I was going to enjoy this. You have been forewarned. I wondered going in if this was essentially going to be Hadley's version of 'A Moveable Feast', and it turns out that book is where McLain got her inspiration. So a second reading of that earlier work is in the cards for me soon. This book is beautifully written, and covers a fascinating period of time: the 20s in Paris, when an incredible collection of artists and writers more or less spontaneously assembled in Paris. You'll meet Hem, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, John Dos Passos, Gertrude Stein, Ford Madox Ford, Harold Loeb, and many, many others. I found myself referring often to Wikipedia to learn more about this fascinating real-life cast of characters. You'll learn a lot about the making of the writer and man who was Ernest Hemingway. McLain's writing is tremendous, and Hadley's voice is pitch perfect in relating her story. Hadley was one of many boats who crashed to near-ruin on Hem's rocky shores, and you feel her pain - and his - acutely as their marriage disintegrates. Even though the subject matter is mostly historic fact, I'd rather not give away how McLain resolves the story. Suffice to say, the ending is satisfying in that way which makes you want to just sit back and reflect upon putting it down for the last time. Highly recommended. And for those who find it enjoyable, I likewise highly recommend Woody Allen's recent film, 'Midnight in Paris', about which I will say nothing except that there's a magical surprise in store for you.
John Carr aka "Oliver Stone" is in trouble again. If you have followed this ex special forces character in previous novels, you know that Stone will find trouble at his door step, literally. In this plot he and his "Camel Club" are in the middle of what seems to be a drug war that involves the Mexicans and Russians that lead to bombings and murders a little to close to the White House and its President. This was a good tale that keeps to the tradition of a Baldacci novel. Not very deep but with enough twists and turns to keep you coming back.
All these years I've been making fun of D-Thom for being a HP-crazie, and now I'm one of them. I'm so hooked I think I actually become Harry Potter in my dreams. :) I blame Dana.

I found this book unsettling. Sue Miller writes so well about the inner lives and thoughts of her characters, but in this book I found their problems and sorrows made me feel sad for a couple of days after I finished the book.

I didn't have much expectation when I packed this book for a short trip last week. This book is the thinnest in comparison to the other series by McCall Smith. Start reading the first chapter when Professor Dr. Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld and his two other German friends attempted to learn to play tennis from a book. Extremely funny! I think this book will strike a chord for intellectual's dry sense of humor. I love this book!

For being written by the man who wrote the novelization of Predator (the movie), I was not expecting such touching prose about life, love, struggle and eventual death. The writing was honest, painful, and indescribably touching. Moreover, I see this book as a primary document for the annals of AIDS history. AZT was a secret super special compound, the NIH and government did everything possible to impede help to a stricken community, and everyone was fumbling in the dark. The sentence of AIDS is a terrifying one in 2011, but did it ever mean something so much worse in 1984. Really enlightening. My only literary issue with this book was that I couldn't always keep straight the Craig's, Rand's, and Richard's. The author and his partner clearly had alot of friends who were important to them, but including them all by name made it hard to keep track.
This book is heartbreaking and beautifully sad.
Only one more book after this one so we are getting a little more information & history. I like the new (3rd) POV better than I thought I was going to. I'm exited to see how this series wraps up in 1/2013!
