The kids from the first book get sucked into a second adventure where they must think outside the box to solve their problems. It was cute. Not a bad second book in the series. I'll read the third someday, but didn't run out to get it.

This intense story is about one woman's quest to discover the truth. Told through the current reflections of Libby and her brother, Ben and flashbacks of the night Libby and Ben's mother and sisters were murdered, the author takes you on a journey of cruel fate. It leaves you with same helpless feeling you get as you watch a train wreck you can do nothing about. It leaves you guessing until the very end with a bit of a twist you don't see coming. The story is well told and though most of the characters aren't exactly likable, you do care for their fate and wish to spare them the hardships that their choices will ultimately cause them. I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I enjoyed the authors style of writing and found the characters to be an interesting collection of dysfunction. The subject matter is a bit difficult and there is an awful scene involving the mutilation of cows, but, if you can get through that, this book is well worth the read.

This being the third time I have now read this book, I was slightly less enamored this time around. Maybe it's my age, but it felt so much more melodramatic, overly long, and a little emptier than the last couple of times. I started getting frustrated with it a little about halfway through, but overall, I still enjoyed the hell out of it. I do wish it focused a little less on plot, and had more character development, and frankly, I kind of wanted to know more about the narrator, who, as Mandy pointed out in her review (and which hadn't occurred to me) rarely incites any action at all. I love that the outsider is telling the story, and how he falls in love with all of these mysterious weirdos individually and collectively, but never really becomes part of them. Tartt seems to be a slow writer, and I respect that. I'm curious to see how she develops over the years.

This book was extremely intense! It was kinda like a train wreck- you can see the tragedy coming, but you can't stop yourself from running headlong into it anyway. The characters were well-written, though at times the supernatural aspects of the story were, in my opinion, more vague than necessary. It kinda felt like the author was trying to remain logical/Western science-oriented, even though she secretly wanted to get more in-depth about the phenomena being discussed. Look, it's a work of fiction; if you want to get into metaphysical philosophies in your book, then do it. Don't worry about the reader; either they will buy into it, or they won't. I also enjoyed the plot technique of flipping between two different eras, as the author also successfully employed in Labyrinth. The setting is beautifully described (I love southern France!), and everyone is (for the most part) clearly defined. It was a little harder with this book discerning which characters corresponded to whom, and I do think the ending was a little abrupt. All this drama and emotional entanglement is brought forward from the past, but then ending didn't quite equate to the depth of feeling. Overall, though, this book was great, and I highly recommend it. (If you haven't read Labyrinth, I recommend reading that first, just to get a feel for the author and her writing style, as well as familiarity with background characters and setting. Not necessary to enjoy this story, just a bit helpful overall).

"I couldn't be mad at him for even a moment,and only now that I loved a grenade did I understand the foolishness of trying to save others from my own impending fragmentation: I couldn't unlove Augustus Waters. And I didn't want to." To give a summary of The Fault In Our Stars would be nearly impossible without spoiling the entire thing. So, I simply gave you a touching quote from the novel. I think what I love the most about John Green is that he doesn't insult his readers' intelligence. He doesn't dumb the story down. He gives you a well thought-out, beautifully written story about the tragedies of life. He does this by sending you on a winding trail of laughter and tears (and let me tell you, I was tearing up in my Spanish class while reading this). The two main characters in this story are Hazel and Augustus. They come together by the one thing that brought them together--cancer. Hazel was diagnosed with stage IV thyroid cancer, and must live with it for the rest of her life. She is on medication for it, and must walk around with an oxygen machine. She fully accepts that one day she will die. Augustus, on the other hand, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. He now has a prosthetic leg, but hey, the cancer seems to be out of his body. To him, he is on a rollercoaster that "only goes up." They both seem to have an obsession with Peter Van Housten's An Imperial Affliction. They want to know what happens to everyone else after Anna, the main character in the novel, dies. They do get a chance to find out. Another character that stood out to me was Augustus' best friend, Isaac. Like Hazel and Augustus, Isaac is a cancer survivor. He is now blind because of it. Like most of Green's characters, Isaac is also very witty. This book will have you thinking about it for well after you've read it. Green has a good way of making you think about your own life and how you live it. For some people, that's a good thing. For others, not so much, but this is a book worth at least trying.

LOVED THIS BOOK!! Encompasses all my interests. The book links various historical events to the current role the US is playing in foreign policy. Although I would recommend maybe skimming the economic based chapters, I learned a lot from this book.

I will forever maintain that Sandman is the best comic ever written. Gaiman was originally given the task of resurrecting a not particularly interesting golden age DC superhero, and instead, managed to change comics forever. He created the Endless- Destiny, Death, Destruction, Dream, Desire, Despair, and Delirium (who used to be delight), created a whole new mythology based on so many sources- Greek/Roman/Egyptian/Norse mythology, fairy tales, fables, DC comic book characters, and of course, Gaiman's own brilliant, twisted psyche. Even if you don't think you like comic books, you should read the Sandman books. They are not like any "comic" you have ever read before, and Gaiman is a true genius.
