Joe R Landsdale is a man who can push your buttons and could care less what you think about it. I can't put his work down, even when it hits me at a visceral level. A master at his craft. There should be more of his work on this site. HIGH COTTON is one of the best short-story compilations I've ever read. And it doesn't even include my favorite Landsdale story. A fantastic writer, who takes you on a hell of a ride.

I rarely give 5 star reviews. This book has stayed with me for many years. It has everything I adore in a romance novel. Alpha male, check. Steamy, slow build up to the sex, check. Angst, check. Happy ending, check. This hard to find gem should be on every girls' shelf.

This was one of those books for me that, as a writer, I was blown away - every page or two I'd practically slap my forehead in awe at the way something was put - the story was a can't-put-it-down-one... All in all - totally awesome!

Got this memoir at Gardiner Public Library. Great book! Don't know whether or not Ms. Smith still lives, but she certainly comes alive in her autobiography. Born in Hancock County, she moved with her then-husband to Aroostock County where they farmed and raised three sons. Her recounting (and acknowledgement at times of "I can't quite remember")of older times is just charming and truthful. Wonderful portraits of local folk done without condescension. Love the chapters entitled "Defense of Old Woman," "My Brother Victor," and "I Live Alone - I Think." Smith covers a huge sweep of time and comes to the fore clearly about her belief in "old" values like hard work, doing the best you can, and keeping close to family and friends. Her recounting of the adventures of Butchie the dog and various cats is hilarious.

I'm picking up short stories more these days and wanted to read about women with lives different from my own and perspectives I might not have contemplated. Some of the stories delivered on my expectations but I also found an echo in the later stories. Had a read something like it already in the collection? I would recommend Senna, though.

It was good. 3 Stars. But you expect more from Tina Fey. It sounded like this was dictated and simply typed out. I was sad. The end.
