Let me start this review by saying I am a bit Bias. This book is a combination of two of my favorite things; The amazing writing of Jeffery Deaver, and James Bond. I was destined to love this book no matter what for those two reasons. I am happy to say I wasn’t let down. I am a James bond fan and have been since I watched the early Sean Connery movies with my Dad. I have to admit that I hadn’t started to read the Ian Flemming books till recently. I was happy to see that Deaver kept the spirit and essence of Flemming’s character in this book. I have to commend Deaver for taking the risk and even thought he stayed true to Flemming’s bond he still made the character his own. Any great writer should make the character his own because trying to copy something another created hardly ever works. This was very well written and an absolute joy to read. The plot was gripping and Deaver still had his classic plot twists to keep the readers guessing. Bond is written in the classic character profile and reminded me of the way Connery Portrayed the character as well. There are a few new additions to the Bond character with the introduction of a new drink, new car (I miss the Aston Martin, but at least he started with a Bentley), and new villains. I loved this book and hope that he is asked to write another one. Some die hard fans of Flemming’s bond may have some issues with Deaver’s take on Bond but I enjoyed it. Anyone who is a fan of James Bond or Deaver should give this read.
