This book is why I love to read.
I had to knock this down to a 4 because of the slightly-excessive language - otherwise this book would be a 6!! I'm still completely wrapped up in the story & find myself thinking about it constantly throughout the day. It's one I'll read over and over again... but perhaps I'll take my sharpie along next time & get rid of some of that language. :)

This book is light, fun, smart, and everything else you expect from a Neal Stephenson book. Admittedly, upon rereading it, it makes FAR more sense after you've taken a little genetics and organic chemistry, but I don't remember being confused the first time I read it either. That's something Stephenson does really well: he writes intellectual stuff so that you feel smarter, not dumber while reading. The main character, S.T., is a ton of fun to hang out with. The story bounces along, the characters are so real you could swear you'd run into them somewhere, and Boston is so lovingly rendered that it makes you homesick.

Through no fault of this novel, I was unable to finish it my first time through . . .
I have a fondness for Alice Hoffman's new england version of magical realism. talented quirky women with magical powers. I have read a few of her books and find them an easy distraction full of lore, gothic tinges, fatalism and romantic twists.

The mother and favored daughter characters reminded me too much of my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, so it was a little disappointing and I don't particulary like books that have a lot of infidelity in them, but most books seem to have that anymore.
I named my teddy bear T.J. after the bear in this book
Thomas Merton is one of my favorite contemporary mystics. His faith expressed in his writing and his life (though so very different from mine) has showed me a rather kindred soul. I plan on taking a silent retreat at the Trappist monastery he lived at as soon as I can.
