Entertaining read - starts strong and ends a bit weak. If you like his TV shows and hic voice in that, you'll love book. I really enjoyed and actually learned things. But I think because I came into AB about 5 years into the game, I was a bit blase about the book.

Wrong cover, Good Reads! This book was not only notable for the scholiosis business, it was the only book I remember reading as a child that actually featured a girl masturbating! Why should teenage boys have all the fun?! Yay, Judy!

The writing is wonderful. Heinrich is very readable. The subject matter, on the other hand, is some of the most amazing characters, feats, and ideals of which I have heard. Heinrich discovers some of this history of his family himself for the first time,which heightens the emotional pull of the book. The history includes both the tragedy of war and the self-inflicted hardships of years of specimen collecting in distant, disease-plagued areas. The latter were undertaken when communication and transportation were so less developed than now that distant areas were truly remote and dangerous. Having not heard about these expeditions before, I really learned about the era when naturalists went on expeditions to collect for museums. Heinrich's father had fanatical dedication to these expeditions. He was happy only when he was exploring wild foreign land, even though the hardships are far beyond what I could take. I thought women of that time (mid 1900's) were adverse to any kind of outdoor roughing it, but the women that Heinrich's father took with him enjoyed the expeditions as much as he did, which is another story. The war stories from both world wars show Heinrich's father, again, as an extraordinary person. They also show what civilian life was like during that time period, something I have never read much about before. I had not appreciated the difficulties normal people faced in Europe. As a child, Heinrich learned much about nature from his father. Heinrich's father studied ichneumon wasps with astounding passion. However, he was absent for most of Heinrich's childhood, and showed very little interest in his son's well-being. On the other hand,he had almost brutally high expectations and he did write copious detailed letters to his son. He is difficult to understand, and Heinrich does a good job of sharing the fascination he engenders. It is hard to express how exciting this book is. Between Heinrich's and his family's extraordinary lives and the fortuitous twists and turns that bring Heinrich to the discovery of the part of this history that he didn't know, it is hard to put the book down.

I only read this book because of all of the hype surrounding it. Its about Bella, a girl who is forced to move to Washington state from Arizona, who falls in love with a vampire at school. It tells how she meets his family, and all of the danger of a whole nother' world falls upon her. Its a good book, if you're a teenage girl or a goth. Anyways, if you like romances that are kinda freakish, you should check it out.

While I respect the Dalai Lama immensely, I wasn't really inspired or convinced by the similarities he saw between various elements of science and Buddhist thought. There ARE some similar tracks, but in my mind they either diverge when looked at in any detail or they just sort of run parallel, seeming similar but emerging from completely different origins and...universes, really...and never converging or dovetailing. Also, I found the book rather slow going--difficult to grasp the concepts, and not written in terribly scintillating language. But I love the openness with which he and his scientist associates explore this concept.

I really liked this book because it deals with the supernatural. Also it has its share of romantic parts and I like those too. This book was also fast paced for most of the time, and that's important to me because I get bored easy. I really like how she built the characters up and so it made me feel like I knew them. I didn't want to put it down.
