Saving Fish from Drowning was a little bit of a departure from the other Amy Tan books I've read, and I think it was a nice change. I don't usually like the use of omniscient narrators in novels, but it didn't bother me in this one. I think the narration was well woven into the action so that it didn't seem so much like the story was being told from a different perspective.

I am completely fascinated by this time period. It is like reading a soap opera. It also helped me to understand how King Henry could be so cruel and it made me sad for Queen Katherine. This was a beautiful love story and a story of perseverance. I loved the descriptions of the spanish court. It certainly made me glad that I am not royalty.
I really loved and was moved by this book, especially the third segment. This is the first book by Andre Dubus III that I have read. I saw the movie adaptation of 'House of Sand and Fog', and thought it was so sad that I have never really had the courage to pick up the book. This memoir however, while it had sad aspects to it was ultimately uplifting. Not in a cheesy Lifetime movie kind of way, but in the sense that one truly gets a feel for how much the events in the author's life have played a role in who he is today. The ruminations on the nature of violence and his descriptions of his slide into the world of fighting are very foreign yet very familiar. All in all a brilliant read, highly recommended.

Not a good textbook. A good exercise book.

Beautiful imagery, incredibly vivid & surreal. Decidedly NOT plot driven stories, but I love her characterizatons of mother/daughter relationships. Rich and troubling. A quick read; well worth it.
Donte Drumm, a young black man who has consistently proclaimed his innocence of killing a highschool cheerleader from his school, has been on death row for nine years and is about to be executed. When a convicted rapist is released from jail and confesses that he raped and murdered the girl, the authorities in Texas refuse to believe him. This is vintage John Grisham and is a good read.
I recently re-read this book to refresh my memory before the movie comes out. I had read it years ago, well before the DaVinci Code and I had always felt this was the better read. Very exciting fun, though far fetched. I love all of the descriptions of the art and architecture in Rome.
I have to say that I didn't care for this book; it wasn't the subject matter that disturbed me but rather the format of the book. It was set up somewhat like a magazine but was even more disjointed. It was like sitting in a theater and having multiple 15-30 second commercials flashed on the screen but never actually seeing a full length movie. I much preferred two other books on the subject of human traffiking: The Road to Lost Innocence and Jantsen's Gift.
This book blends a great story with 60's history. I had a little trouble getting into it, but once I did, I was hooked. For all 811 pages. So many twists and surprises.
