Loved it. Not your typical vampire read. I loved the beginning of this book. They treat the vampire thing as a plague. Excellent!

This was better than A million little pieces but you would have to read that first to understand this one. I actually liked this book alot.

I have recommended this several times to friends who I know normally don't read history or maybe, biography at best, and the reason I continue to do so is because for all the dry passages about the depression in land values and the long term effects of the industrial revolution, Cannadine has cleverly managed to slip in biographical vignettes along the way of a whole slew of eccentric British aristocrats that are simply irresistible.

I LOVE Jennifer Weiner. But this was disappointing.
** spoiler alert ** Keep in mind, I have seen the movie and am comparing it to the movie and really they are so completely different that is unfair. However, the book just kind of made me depressed. He was never happy for more than a few short periods in his life. Since he wasn't moving in the same direction as everyone else he didn't have people who he could have a constant relationship with. The loneliness that was conveyed was always brought upon him because he was moving in the wrong direction. Since it was just a short story, it was a quick read but I think I would have enjoyed it more if there were more detail. He would say things like, "Benjamin Button went to war and felt alive. Then he came back home and liked his wife even less." I just wanted more substance but again I think that is because I have the movie in the back of my mind.
absolutely loved it! thank god I read the revised ending, its still not happy enough but aww...heartbreak! i dont think i could have borne the original ending... Definitely going to try reading more Dickens after this, inspite of being so old its so gripping and real and emotionally wringing

Here Joan Didion chronicles the year following her husband's sudden death, during which their only daughter is hospitalized and in and out of comas/the ICU. She turns to literature. She researches. She fixates on the moment of death. She cycles back. She replays the scene. As others note, Didion has led a charmed life and ,yes, her nonchalance comes off as smarmy. But she is not exempt from loss. She is honest here; the result is sometimes haunting. I particularly like how she captures the triggers associated with grief (e.g., a crossword puzzle answer can be a landmine).

A rather turgid, slow-moving thriller in which a prominent member of the bar is murdered and Pointer of Scotland Yard investigares. Little excitement and very little action make it somewhat a dull read.

Let me start by saying this...this book made me cry, not once, not twice, but four separate times. The story that unfolds in this book is touching, and emotional. We know from the beginning of the novel that something happens, something big, that affects the characters, but we don't know what. The first half of the book leads us up to that something. Here is where we meet the characters and feel attached to them. And then we see and feel and experience the after. The story is about three teenagers: Mia, Zach, Lexi and its also about Mia & Zach's mom Jude Farraday. There are other important characters throughout the story, but pivotal characters are those above. We get to know them, understand them individually and together and then we watch them as they endure tragedy. As a writer, what amazes me about the way Kristin Hannah tells her story is that if feels very spontaneous. A character makes a decision and we see that decision unfold into consequence. It's not so easy to execute. A writer knows the outcome of a story, but Kristin Hannah does it, and in a way that seems both effortless & seamless. This is what makes parts of the story so heartbreaking. I loved this book...it is on my favorites list. A highly recommended read; suitable for both adults and teens. Bravo!!!
