More straightforward novel than the Murakami I'd read prior ( Kafka on the Shore, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) - it's basically a romance story, though still haunted by the loss and longing and otherworldliness that I'd grown used to in Murakami's other works. Start with either of the parenthetical titles, not this one, if you're looking to read Murakami for the first time.

The Hunger Games series started off with a very intriguing version of a dystopian society, and I loved the first book. It was action packed and exciting and I was completely unable to put it down. However, with each following book, I began to grow disappointed with the storyline. I started the second book with the enthusiasm of believing it would live up to the first, but in my eyes it fell short. At the end of the second book, I basically had to make myself pick up the third book, just for the sake of getting the series over with. I was very disappointed with the quality of the writing and dwindling character development & storylines. Reading Mockingjay was painful, and I was only kept going by the need to have it be over with. As an end to what started out as a great series, it was quite disappointing as the 'The Hunger Games' Saga ending.

An interesting philosophical unraveling of the myth of religion - especially Christianity - from a scientific basis. The science-heavy middle part is well, heavy reading and at times excruciatingly boring. It remains doubtful how many minds this would change, but maybe I'm too much of a cynic.

I first read this book 2 years ago when it first came out and really liked it, in fact I gave it 5 stars. Unfortunately when I recently re-read the book I didn't enjoy it as much. It was still a good read but not a great read.

In light of my new mindset on cooking and blogging I decided that the time had finally come to read Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell (the subtitle of which, given the upcoming movie release, has been unnecessarily changed to My Year of Cooking Dangerously). Julie is a woman who, in response to her unfulfilling job as a secretary and a rapidly approaching 30th birthday, decided that she is going to spend the year cooking every recipe in Julia Child’s epic book Mastering the Art of French Cooking, blogging about the experience as she goes along. Her husband gamely (but warily) accepts that this is just something that she has to do, and the Julie/Julia project is born. The book covers her (mis)adventures and triumphs as she cooks her way from vegetables dishes to parts of the animals that even made me a twinge squeamish (a girl who, among other things, has voluntarily eaten worms and bugs before). I found myself laughing out loud and really relating to Julie, not only in our mutual and semi-fanatical love of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but also in her descriptions of the different ways she and her friend deal with stress (drinking and cooking vs. running and cleaning). Overall, this was just a really fun read. It was nice to hear about someone who was able to start a project like her's and have it unintentionally turn into such an opportunity. I think it gives hope that satisfaction in life can sometimes come from the most unlikely endeavors.
