What a very interesting look into a yet another part of American (both North and South) history that I've never known much about it. This story starts out in Chile in the mid 19th century and ends a few years after the gold rush in California, spanning all the history and people inbetween. I had no idea that so many Chileans came to CA to pan for gold, along with so many others in the world! I also wasn't aware of the pure debauchery that went on to the extent the story eludes at this time in American history. I knew the West was untamed and brutal, but wow! Obviously it's a fictional story, but I'm guessing the author based it on some kind of truth. It was certainly an interesting snapshot of how the West started to develop and how many different kinds of people made it what it is today. Anyway, I very much enjoyed it, but my only qualm was the abrupt ending. It was sailing along quite nicely and I think it could've done with a bit more of a neat tie-off, but I do get what the author was going for (choose-your-own-adventure and all that!). Unique and great read overall though!

I love that I read this book finally after so many years of having it on my shelf! It also was a beautiful, character-driven novel filled with musical nuances and epotimizes everything that is Southern Gothic literature. It's like to Kill a Mockingbird with a safety pin through it's nose...I gave it four stars only because it was so depressing that I did have to put it down at times so as to avoid drinking midday...

Excellent story but a bit hard to read at the beginning. You want to know more about Hester Prynne at the end. I also loved the movie which I watched after reading the book and expected to hate.

I love this story. I loved the movie so I decided to read the book. The main character changes a whole village. Add chocolate to that and you have a delicious read. I only gave it a four because the ending wasn't very good.

Overly detailed but still interesting and sometimes exciting history of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, the formation of the Irish Republican Army and the British political police, the so called "Special Branch" which were initially the "Special (Irish) Branch. Reading "Fenian Fire" shows just how little the attitudes of the English establishment regarding the Irish and Roman Catholics have changed in the past 120 years. Lots of minutiae regarding raising money in America, shadowing Irish activists in Paris and the internal politics of the Metropolitan Police at the end of the nineteenth century but also some very intriguing revelations on how Scotland Yard had not only penetrated the Irish Repubican movement at the top. The British police were responsible, at least in part, for some of the deaths caused by bombing campaigns in England. The invention and widespread availability of dynamite, a stable high explosive that could be easily transported and hidden, changed the rules. An example of the eagerness with which the Irish Republicans adopted the new bomb making material was the title of one of their leading newspapers in the United States: The Irish Liberator and Dynamite Times which says a lot in itself.
