Haven't read these in a while-- time for a reread so I can catch up and read the newer ones I haven't read yet. Still startlingly good. Worth reading again and again.

I worked at a winery so I purchased this book out of curiosity, and I found it to be an easy and enjoyable read! I would recommend this book to anyone working in viticulture, studying botany/horticulture, or curious enough to learn a little bit about the biology of the grapevine.
I hesitated to give this book four stars, because it was not quite as good as Shadow of the Wind. Still, Zafon has wonderful passages, despite the story having serious gaps. It easily could have been tightened up and pared down a bit. He returns to familiar haunts to unfold the story of a young writer who advances from assistant at a local newspaper to become author (writing under a pseudonym) of a series of popular penny thrillers, with the help of a wealthy and guilt-ridden patron, when he is approached by a mysterious Parisian published to write a fable (that will promote a new religion). Although it is unspoken, and I initially thought I might be reading a vampire story, the villian appears to be a fallen angel or even Lucifer himself. What is clear is that the protagonist is beset with misgivings and then fear, and then becomes something of a Typhoid Mary, whose activities and investigations inevitably lead to unfortunate events befalling those around him. His heart belongs to a young woman whose marriage (I will not reveal to whom) tears him apart. I think the strongest part of the story is his relationship with a young aspiring writer who insinuates herself into his life; his manueverings to introduce her to a potential husband are precious. Overall, though, Zafron seems to lose control of this novel. It does not hang together well. Perhaps his editor should have been tougher. Still, it is better than most of the fiction I have read recently.

This is the best romance book I have read! It sucks you in right from the very begining. I love that this is a story about a tattooed bad boy and a sheltered good girl. The chemistry between Brian and Candace is amazing and so hot. Although they are different, they complement each other perfectly. This is my first Cherrie Lynn book and I will definately be reading more from her.

Such an original and refreshing story! It has everything: history (American), mystery, comedy, romance, etc. Definitely worth reading.

Looks thick. Imposing. Hopefully reasonably up-to-date on cognitive science. I love Pinker, though, so it should be a good ride (if Tolstoyian). Makes my other books look like spineless child trolls, to quote a certain actor. :P I want a book on how Charlie Sheen's mind works! ;) Will update.

High Fidelity is an even better book than I first thought

oh that confoundingly ambiguous ending. true or not? i don't think it made me believe in god, but more so the breadth of human invention, instinct, and ingenuity. but beautiful story, well told.
