this book was a total surprise; i picked it up on the street and was blown away. it is a fictionalized narrative of a war that occurred in southern brazil in the late 19th century. an itinerant preacher espousing his own brand of christian faith wanders southern brazil, eventually gathering thousands of followers from the poorest ranks of brazilian society. they settle in a town called canudos, and are branded traitors by a government in conflict looking for scapegoats. this band of starving fanatics fends off the full force of the brazilian army for an amazing amount of time. the depth of llosa's writing had me wondering what was real and what was fiction even in some of the most fantastic moments. ever read a book and then want everyone you know to read it? yeah, this one.

Slow start, but still very good. A fictional character (or a few) that worked well in with the real ones. Brendan is brave and honorable - two outstanding qualitites for the hero in a story such as this. Most of the historical fiction I have read from this time period has had a female main character. I enjoyed the male perspective in this one.

This book had complex and interesting characters. Balram, the main character, had a good angel on his right shoulder and a bad angel on his left. He mostly listens to the bad angel. The way this story was written is very engaging. I never lost interest. I appreciated the way the author, through his character of Balram, described what it feels like to be a member of the lower class - and in particular, Balram's impulse to rub his master's feet, and subsequently the feet of the Chinese Premier, to which the letter is written.
