The Rivalry is a good, all-encompassing account of the NBA's growth from the barnstorming league of the late 50s to the emerging major league of the late 60s, focusing in particular on the individual rivalry between Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, and on the contrast between the two men. The book is a bit simplistic, and is a bit too hard on Chamberlain sometimes for my tastes - he was, without question, the better player - but this is a really good starting point for people who are looking to learn about what professional basketball was like during his era.

I, for once, have nothing against the writing or the secondary characters or the plot, all of which were fine. My problem is Emilia. Her motivations are off-base (she doesn't like her dad or her mom, so she acts like her Dad ... what?) and she's incredibly self-centered. Plus, if she was so wracked with guilt at "killing" Isabel, why didn't she just have a doctor look at the autopsy? Don't most people know that there are always signs of asphyxiation that show up in an autopsy? They wouldn't say that Isabel died of SIDS if there was a chance she died of smothering - they'd investigate to find out if she was smothered. Chick lit.

a lovely book. as usual with gladwell, he has researched a lot and this fantastic ability to put it all together. some of the research work is startling and hard to dispute while sometimes the assumptions seem simplistic. but a good book nevertheless. For some it's a valuable book on parenting. An insight I got - giving our kids a sense of entitlement is important for them.

What a wonderful read. Loved reading from the 3 different points of view. I will miss Minny, Aibileen and Skeeter! 05/27/09 Re-read 5/10/11 before the movie comes out in a couple of months. Still love this book.

I love the pictures in this book. It's so fascinating to me to see how a baby grows and develops in the uterus and the photos are incredible. Some of the writing wasn't that good & I noticed several typos, but beyond that, the book is great!
