What a fabulous book - even though I have to admit that it took me several attempts to finally get past the first 50 pages (don't know why...). But then I was hooked and couldn't put the book down anymore until I had reached the end. I suffered with Stephie and Nellie, two sisters from Vienna who are sent to live with foster families in Sweden in the summer of 1939. I felt their anger, their grief and frustration. The book is very well researched and makes a journey back in time easy for the reader. At the same time it challenges the reader to reflect on his/her own attitude towards immigrants as well as his/her own courage to stand up for what is right. This book would clearly spark a lot of discussions when read aloud or in a literature group.

Love this book because it is insightful about an extraordinary man who has made much difference in the world. The struggles he went through remind me that I can have the courage to overcome obstacles to seek what is true for my path. Hope he continues his good work!

I read this book so many times growing up that the pages are falling out. (I know that sounds creepy, but keep in mind I was planning on being the next Clarice Starling. Haha.)

Here's the thing. I love goats. I love absurd. I adore dark. And Please give me more stories about beats. Insert cliche, common opinion review of Tob Robbins gender roles and style here. Three stars from me just means that everybody could read this once. Like Life of Pi.
I loved the imagery in this book---it was beautiful from beginning to end, although so sad and painful at times. The story is one of loss and trying to find meaning in a life that seems already determined by class and gender for the main character. I learned volumes about a part of the world and time that I knew nothing about before I started reading it (women in Japan in the 1800s). Reading this reminded me a major reason for why I love to read--escaping to an entirely new and different place.

We are reading this for our book club this month and it was nice to return to this little novella again. An amusing bit of fluff.

Classic King. A short, straightforward story mixing elements of horror and the supernatural in an eerily plausible way. I found it mesmerizing, and one of his better novellas. The protagonist conquers her terror with an attitude that has stuck with me, years later. You can defeat me, she says, but I won't defeat myself. Read for a mesmerizing hour or two!

Read this in my 9th grade Honors English class! It made an impression on me, but I didn't do very well in the class. LOL!
I wasn't going to like this book; in fact I wasn't even going to read it. A love affair b/t boy of 15 and woman of 30-something? No thanks. I'm thankful, though, that I read some reviews and realized there was more here. And more I found, as on I read. It's a good book. Schlink dives into the "anesthesia" of the age, how, overcome by appaling sights, we tend ironically towards ennui. We get bored with them, like the judges, lawyers, audience at the Nuremburg trials. Schlink nails it here in a very specific context. As I see it, the crux, the rub is in the abstract: the relationship b/t the "kid" (Michael) and Hanna never becomes REAL. Sure it's real in the physical sense, but all that leaves him w/ is guilt--on all its personal and social (post-WWII) levels. Real in the psychological sense, real in the spiritual sense is never achieved in Michael's life b/c, well, I'm not sure. I could say it's b/c he's only looking for, as I see it, answers: how to "deal with" Hanna? How to answer the questions he has? But that assessment might overly simplify a well-written and engaging novel, which this is.

I had to read this for my 9th grade summer reading assignment. I was looking forward to reading it because of the rave reviews it got but when I actually started reading it I couldn't wait to finish. The main character was whiny and annoying. She reminded me of Bella from Twilight. It was predictable and boring in my opinion.
