On the night of the Full Moon, 16-year-old Jena and her three sisters dress in their best gowns and go through a hidden portal in an alcove of their castle in Transylvania. From there, they are ferried across a lake in which their cousin Costi was once drowned by a witch, until they come to a forest where they dance with magical creatures until morning. This continues for ten years until their beloved father suddenly falls ill, and must go away for the winter to recover in a warmer climate. Then, Jena’s older sister Tati falls deeply in love with a stranger from the fairy world who is under the spell of vampire-like Night People. If she weds him, she will have to live in the fairy realm forever. Not only that, the girls’ cousin Cezar takes control of the castle and the family finances, which Jena had hoped to manage herself. Vowing revenge for the death of his brother against the fairy folk who haunt the surrounding lake and woods, Cezar threatens to fell the trees, force Jena to marry him, and put an end to the girls’ secret travels. He also objects to Jena’s strange pet frog, whose thoughts she can read. Can Jena stop Cezar from destroying the forest and protect the people and creatures she loves? Teen girls who enjoy fantasy but feel most comfortable in the realm of fairy tales in which there is no foul language or gruesome violence would enjoy this suspenseful story that borrows heavily from The Twelve Dancing Princesses and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. The fanciful surroundings of the woods and the lake, combined with melodic Transylvanian names of people (Tadeusz, Tati, Iulia) and places (Piscul Dracului) make for a romantic setting. The female protagonists are intelligent, strong-willed and well-developed characters, who learn to trust their instincts in a confusing world, in which many forces seem to be working against them.

OK overview of the war, but not much detail. A fine starting point for someone interested in approaching the subject for the first time.

My Lord! I finally finished this God awful book!!! It was one of the worse books I have ever read. In my opinion, it was based on the suppositions of Plutarch and Dio and they rarely agreed. The only redeeming factor was that I learned quite a bit about Cleopatra. She was a strong woman and a great ruler in a man's world.

how musicians hear music through their souls, not their ears. i am not a musician and it was fabulous to read the world through this little girl's ears.

I rarely re-read books, but this one held up a five-star rating twice. This book follows the journey of one shy, possibly autistic boy through the course of one school year. Starting out as a loner, Charlie takes the advice of his therapist and tries to make friends and "participate" in life. With the help of some older kids and one attentive teacher who take him under their wing, Charlie shares his favorite songs and books and his best and worst days with us, giving us a glimpse into his honest thoughts. Side by side, we experience the pain of remembering difficult things; beginning to understand adult problems, grieving loved ones and withered friendships, overcoming trauma and the joy of growing into oneself. This highly quotable novel reads like a journal-memoir, and may be a good high school readers' advisory pick when the film is released in 2012.

Another good kids book. For the child in us all.
How could such a bleak and pessimistic book fill me with such hope? Cormac McCarthy's The Road is a devastating read about a father and son surviving a destroyed nuclear winter-esque earth with no living life except the few surviving humans. The few survivors are reduced to living off the few edible goods left or by cannibalism. What keeps this from becoming a unbearable downer is the interaction between father and son. The nameless father lives only to protect his son even though he knows he will be dying soon himself while the son still shows signs of compassion often wishing to help others while the father knows this would be suicidal for both of them. It is this relentless love between these two and the struggle between survivalist protection and the last remains of compassion that makes this bleak book so bearable and eventually gives the reader a ray of hope, if not for the survival of the human race but for the survival of the human spirit. McCarthy's brisk but sparse and quotationless style is perfect for setting the tone for this work. I cannot see any other writer doing this tale justice. An early contender for best novel of the 21th century

the preaching about global warming seemed a bit contrived. all good stuff, but a total different direction from the previous books.
