i enjoyed this book from the start. very breezy read. got a little bored in the middle, but the end was pretty great. i particularly enjoyed Abigail Von Normal's journal entries. i'd say Christopher Moore truly understands what it's like to be overly dramatic with a love of creatures from horror stories and an inappropriate liking for the color black.

I've read dozens of Agatha Christie murder mysteries. I'm not going to list them all here b/c I read them a long time ago and they all kind of blend together after a while. This one, though, is different and sticks out in my mind as being very good. I highly recommend this one and "And then there were none." That book also goes by "Ten Little Indians."

This book was like a runaway train...it just kept picking up speed! I wouldn't say it was the best-written book, but its plot kept me reading. It's sort of a psychological mystery...you keep reading because you want to know whodunit, but also because the characters all seem shady enough to be involved. I was disappointed with the ending. It wrapped up too quickly and left me disappointed with the status of one of the characters but all in all, it's a tense and fast-paced read. I've read Road of the Dead by this author, and felt the same way about that book. Both books set in England, with teenage characters who are grappling with various issues...drinking, abuse, sexuality, negligent parents. There's definitely an edge to the books. For older teens.

This book is rather dry, it is non-fiction, and a little repetitive - doctors are not infallible - but it was a good "awareness raiser" of the things that we as patients can do to improve our medical treatment. I would recommend it for people who are going through diagnosis of a problem.

"Red-Headed Stepchild" is a debut fantasy novel from Jaye Wells with a good dose of sexual tension. As a debut novel there was quite a bit of world-building and scene setting, but the story still moved along at a rapid pace with not too much lag time. The heroine is a kick-butt assassin who becomes torn between her two worlds as the novel progresses. Sabrina is the product of a forbidden union between a vamp and a mage. Her mother died not long after her birth and she was brought up by her Grandmother (note the captial G) who is the Head of the Dominae (vampires) and as cold as they come. Her Grandmother raised Sabrina in an almost-vacuum, while teaching her exactly what she wanted Sabrina to know--all other races are inferior, the Dominae is everything and as a halfbreed Sabrina owes her life and loyalty to those who raised her. And finally, she also raised Sabrina to be a stone-cold assassin who kills the 'targets' selected by the Dominae without question. Although Sabrina is frustrated by her inability to receive any kind of warm approval from her Grandmother, she still tries...until the day her target is her best friend and she's sent to become a spy in an enemy camp. I admit to having some issues with Sabrina and her adamant refusal to open her eyes to the reality of what was going on around her. I understand WHY the author began the book the way she did...but that doesn't mean I have to like it. However, as the story unfolded I began to warm to Sabrina (in spite of her mulishness) and actually feel a bit sorry for her situation. As first novels go, this one was pretty good. The action was fast-paced, the world is fairly complex without being confusing, and the heroine is certainly memorable. There were some weak spots where I felt the author was trying too hard to spell things out for me ad infinitum...but I'll still put the next book on my to buy list. If nothing else, I want to see where all that sexual tension goes!!

All I remember about this book is Stop reading if you don't want big plot twist spoiled Don't be heartbroken... Even though IMO you are not missing much... It's a dramatic story for a few hundred pages, and then there is a flood. Suddenly, hilarity ensues. A dog with rabies comes out of nowhere, floats up to the guy, bites him, and then floats away into the night. I still laugh thinking about it. It's hard for me to take what happens from there on out all that seriously.

Briggs is a good author and weaves a good tale. She's found real success with the Mercy Thompson books, but from reading the introduction to this novel it's pretty easy to tell her heart lies with more traditional fantasy. Basic plot: Aralorn and Wolf must figure out who put the Lyon of Lambshold into a death-like state before it's too late. This story reminded me a bit of a locked-room mystery. There are only so many people who could be involved, so it's a matter of figuring out who among them is guilty. There are a few heavy-handed moments from the author (methinks the author tries to deny this person's guilt too much), but it's all in all a good story.
