I needed something light as an antidote to the serial-killer tale "Devil in the White City". The pendulum swung a little too far. Pretty average chick lit about two women (one the single urban career woman, the other the suburban housewife/mother of two) who think the grass must be greener elsewhere and swap lives for a month.

I'm not really into short stories, and I couldn't force myself to keep reading this book.

Helluva way to get to know yourself, to dive into the history of a block in New York City and expect to find a story tight enough to fit into a book, and strong enough to carry you through the inevitable tragedy. Good thing it was Will Eisner who tried - and accomplished - this.

19yo heroine may lose her family ranch & her 3 younger brothers to foster care unless she marries her late stepmother's wealthy brother. She opts for marriage but doesn't want him rushing her into physical intimacy. Heroine doesn't feel right going to bed with Hero without love. A car accident pushes her to see how much Hero means to her. But did all that waiting drive Hero to change his mind about staying married to her? This book started out well enough, with increasing sexual awareness b/w Hero & heroine and a promising romance. But it went downhill after all the waiting heroine did to decide when she felt comfortable enough to consummate her marriage to Hero. I wouldn't have minded if Armstrong filled that waiting period with Hero & heroine doing some deep introspection or some growing up or something that kept their sexual tension brewing. Instead what we get are mundane details about the household (i.e., heroine's younger brothers, their housekeeper, her brother's dog). It bored me silly. So, when heroine finally make up her mind, I was no longer interested. Minimally recommended. Expect some boredom.

Good series about late colonial America. Not all of the U.S. is discovered yet and it's the time where science and technology are starting to take over from folk lore, superstitions, and the old ways. Story of the young boy who is the 7th son of a 7th son and is the 13th child of his family giving him "all the knacks." Good read, which is always due to Orson Scott Card's writing ability.
Una de mis novelas favoritas, te hace imaginar y vivir la historia

I liked this memoir by, as many readers by now no doubt know, a Chinese-American Yale law professor who raised her two daughters "the Chinese way." The negative or incindiary articles about and comments on it that I have read seem to focus on whether the author's way was good or bad, and treat the book as a parenting manual. I approached the book for what it was (a memoir) and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much. The author writes in an engaging and straightforward manner. She is often very, very funny--at least, I assumed that some of her more outlandish statements were more funny than serious and I don't think I'm off the mark there. In my experience, raising children is tough work, and what works for one family, one parent, one child, won't work for others, and parents don't always get it right the first time. I think that's the conclusion of this author. She's just sharing her journey toward it.
