Another great book. Tough, emotional book. You hate him, you love him in the end. I'll never look at a Granny Smith apple the same again;) My only 'argh' moment was the very end..didn't feel complete (until the Insider's Guide).

This book was easy to read. I gave it 2 stars because it kept my attention, but the 'voice' of the Delores sounded... faked, like the high-pitched whine of someone trying to sound like a 6th grader. It was annoying. Deedee, even while doling out "don't-be-superficial-it'll-get-you-nowhere" words and feelings, seemed immensely superficial. She took on that "I say I don't care, but I really do, and you know it," persona. I didn't like her. I can see how middle school girls would like this book, but for anyone older than freshman year of high school, I don't recommend it.

This is a good look into paranoid schizophrenia, without being too much of a lesson on the illness (comparable, in a way, to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time). The city of New York was one of the main characters, especially the subway lines, which was done well without being over-the-top in detail. Lowboy/Will's characterization pulled me in from the beginning. I don't think that the author was quite as successful with Violet's character, as I found myself skimming her sections to get back to Lowboy. I really liked Wray's writing style, and I look forward to reading another novel from him in the future.

this was a page-turner, much more interesting to me now than it was in high school. i like Huxley's positing of the necessity of struggle, pain, and solitude for a fulfilling life. and i think the projections he makes about a world of amusement and pleasure that just makes people passive and obedient is prescient. our consumerist society approximates this vision in frightening ways, and for that reason alone this book elucidates much and is worth reading. however i disagree with the assumption of the author that the advance of technology and social control leads to a reduction in unhappiness. instead, we've seen the spread of capitalism causing yet more and more misery, spread across the world. the development of distractions like sex, drugs, and rock and roll are used to cover up the scars of our agonized planet and communities. i think George Orwell's dystopia of 1984 is more frighteningly believable, yet Brave New World is fascinating in its own, perhaps complementary ways. also, Huxley is a very good writer, and this book flows a lot easier than 1984.

I purchased this book when I was landlocked in the Blue Mountains as I always need a piece of the sea with me. It took me a while to get around to reading it, I think I was saving it as a book to read after reading something that I didnt like (to make me feel better, a sort of healing book). I knew I would like it but in the end I absolutely adored this beautiful Australian book. I loved reading about Byron Bay in the 60's and the characters themselves were lovingly rendered as well. I have a great passion for the ocean and I could feel parts of myself in the main character Flinch...this is the kind of book I could read again and again and not get tired of the imagery or the characters.
I read it for Battle of the Books. I liked Homeless Bird by her better. This takes place around the time of the Russian revolution. It would be a good recommendation for kids who enjoy historical fiction. The story has some dimension within the characters, but is a pretty simple story in general. It would provide a good character study because the main character is very dynamic.

I really tried to like this book, but I feel its focus is off. Instead of being a story about Anna, it should be a story of Olivia, or Jessie, or the relationship between them (sisters). As it is, I just don't like Anna herself. I don't feel the narration puts me "on her side," either. She seems to be a take-her-or-leave-her character. Well, I'd just as soon leave her . . . and I did. I read two-thirds of the book, maybe even three-fourths, but I just couldn't turn another page. Unusual for me. Unfortunately, this is my first Gilchrist book. Maybe I'll try another one down the line, but this one has put a bad taste in my mouth.
