Part of this book took place in Vancouver BC, the rest in Seattle which was cool. It's always fun reading books with locations that you are familiar with. It was a solid love story with a bit of an edge since one of the ex's was a real douche.

The difference between reading this book and the re-edited version printed in "The Florence King Reader" was like taking a master's class. It taught me more about what to toss out and what to leave in than all of the English classes I have ever taken.

Fun book, one I'll likely keep to read to my kids someday. Very predictable....I have to admit that I skimmed the last half because I had already figured out the plot. But still very entertaining!

This was an "okay" book. This pales in comparison to "White Oleander". It took some effort to get through this book before it finally picked up. For those thinking of reading this book, I suggest doing so to fully appreciate "White Oleander".

I quit maybe 60 or 70 pages in, because it was poorly written. Too bad, because the premise (a behind-the-scenes chef for a television show star) was interesting.

1984 by George Orwell took the world of the future and placed it into a world controlled by "big brother" (wheather that be an actualy person or just a poster boy for a orginization. my moneys on the ladder of the two) and two other organizations that are in control of china and russia respectivly. After getting into the book a little it almost seemed like this would turn into a murder/rape story. Our "protagonist" Winston is a little freaky considering during the two minute hate he wants to do alot of less than moral acts to julia. Then we find out she's a girl that just wants to break the rules and live by her own. The majority of the book was their secret meetings to get it on. eventually the book picks up at act two, and this is the part where i started to get that "have to know what happens next urge" once Winston and Julia decide to go against Big Brother and are recruited by O'Brian. I personally decided to take the side of "evil" Big Brother and was rooting for them to get caught, so when they were both taken and tortured I had a little smug smile on my face. The torture situation was interesting, and i loved how at the ending they had both been turned into supporters of Big Brother. This was probably my least favorite book of them all, just because it wasn't my style and when i read a book that is set in this type of scenario with a utopia gone wrong, I compare it to one of my favorite books, "The Giver" and nothing tends to stike me as well as that book did. However, once you get past the first chapter the story picks up and becomes interesting, so its not a terrible read.

Lamott's book on writing inspired me to write--what better review can I give? I loved her style and, of course, her words. She had wonderful advice (one inch picture frame and writing as if your parents are dead, for instance). Some of her stories about her friend, Pammy, who was dying of cancer, were so real and wrenching, they just made me want to live a little better that day. The book was written in 1994, so some things were a bit dated, like sending her manuscript off via the mail vs. email. It doesn't seem like 1994 was that long ago, but at times I had the feeling I was poking around in a time capsule. A gem of a book though!
4 Stars! Finally some answers...but I wanted more!! Review to come...

Another Chinese folklore that is a favorite of mine as a kid. This sad story is about a cute duckling who lives with his family on a boat. This boat lets the duck off the boat once a day to eat and roam around the bank along the river. When its time to get back on the boat Ping is off doing his thing and misses the boat. Ping gets pick up and caged by some other men and escapes (my memory is fuzzy about that part). Ping finally catches up with his family and barley makes it on the boat being the last one...and for being the last one he gets one whip with a stick for being so as every duck who is last gets a whip. Ouch!!
