this is the last book I remember reading that wasn't 'required' or 'recommened' and didn't cost over $90. I enjoy the point of view it was written in. I love the non-traditional view of the after life. Easy and quick to read. Ah, simplicity at its best.

Cause and effect, it makes you angry to read how we (the US) pretty much gave power to these terrorist organizations of Afghanistan and its regions.

I found the characters rather flat, even for romantic/historical fiction. The plot was slow and cumbersome. The questions being asked seemed repetitive, and the love story was frankly poorly done (I know Chaikin can do better!). All that said, the ending had some excitement and a really delicious twist, so I'm dead-neutral on this book. Read it if you will. There were 2 mistakes that I found content-wise in the book, but that's not too terrible. It's an easy read.

I'm re-reading parts of this for the zillionth time right now because I'm using Hempel for part of my comprehensive exams. I could go on for pages about why these stories are technically magnificent in terms of form and language, but instead I will just say that they make my heart ache in exactly the same spot every time I read them, no matter how many times I read them, and Hempel owns that spot exclusively.
