It's so hard to believe that this is her history. Goes to show you that when you meet a person, you just can't guess on their pasts, because trials make some people stronger and some people crazy. I'm glad for Janette Walls that the latter part of her life has been friendlier to her stomach.

I really liked this book - for many reasons. There is SO much in here of Americana that has gone unknown for some reason or other but should not have. And Larson's book is extremely well put together to infuse the exciting historical triumphs and tribulations with chilling fear and foreboding...even though we know what is about to happen. Without giving away too much - just the amount of American culture, inventions and more - that were invented for or inspired by this monumental national "fair" is astounding and make it an extremely enlightening and enjoyable read. This should be on a must-read list for any student of American History, Architecture, or even criminal investigators... not to mention for those of us who just love the amazing mixed with the macabre.

I attempted to read this just because it looked so ridiculous/pathetic, and gave up at page 9: "Inside she felt disturbed, which, she supposed, wasn't all that unbelievable because this man, with his erect carriage, his strong body, high cheekbones, the slightly hooded miss-nothing green eyes, oozed sex appeal".
